The Best of Gov Ball 2017

June 7, 2017

It’s officially summer in New York City and you know what means – lots and lots of outdoor music festivals and concerts!  This past weekend, we kicked off the beginning of that season with Gov Ball 2017.

We lucked out with beautiful weather on Friday and Saturday with sunny skies and temperatures in the seventies, but Sunday brought gray skies and showers.  Sunday’s performers didn’t let a little bad weather rain on their parade though and finished off the weekend with a number of great performances.  Overall, Gov Ball 2017 was one of the best Gov Ball’s to date.  Here are the highlights:

Chance the Rapper

Chance the Rapper brought the Be Encouraged Tour to Randall’s Island on Friday night for his set as the Day One headliner.  He rode out onto the stage on a motorcycle before launching into some of our favorite songs from his latest album, Coloring Back.   He also treated the crowd to some of the songs that he collaborated on with his mentor, Kanye West, for Life of Pablo including “Ultralight Beam”, “Waves”, and “Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1.”  Chano also couldn’t resist bringing out some guests during his set.  He brought out Francis and the Lights to perform their song “May I Have This Dance” and ended his set by welcoming Ty Dolla $ign to join him for “Blessings” reprise.  My favorite part of his performance, though, was when he busted out his verse of DJ Khaled’s “I’m The One” dressed, of course, in a Gucci belt.

Childish Gambino

Childish Gambino’s Saturday night headlining set was one of the most anticipated performances of the weekend, and he certainly did not disappoint with it.  He started out with “Me And Your Mama” and “Boogie Man,” and then segued into some of his older material from Because The Internet.  Later on in his set, he revealed, for this first time, the name of his son as he dedicated his song “Baby Boy” to him.  Childish Gambino did break our hearts a couple of times throughout the night, though.  First, he told the crowd that Gov Ball was going to be his only show of the year.  But the real kicker came later when he finished his last song of the night, “Redbone” and then said, ““I’ll see you for the last Gambino album.”

Wiz Khalifa

On the final night of Gov Ball 2017, Wiz Khalifa and We Know the DJ’s very own DJ Bonics took the stage.  Khalife performed many of his hits including “Roll Up,” “Work Hard, Play Hard,” “Black and Yellow,” “No Sleep,” and his “Closer” remix.  Ty Dolla $ign came out to support his TGOD family for cameos for performances of “You and Your Friends” and “Blasé.” We also got to see the softer side of Wiz as he honored his transgender brother, who passed away earlier this year, before launching into a touching performance of “See You Again.”  To end his night, be brought the energy of the crowd back up with “We Dem Boyz” and “Young, Wild and Free.”

Lorde performed her song, “Perfect Places,” for the first time on Friday night at Gov Ball, and we have a feeling we’re going to be hearing a lot more of it this summer.  For the majority of her set, she was joined onstage by fellow Gov Ball 2017 performer Jack Antonoff, who was the executive producer on her upcoming album Melodrama.  Melodrama is set to be released in less than two weeks, on June 16, and after her Gov Ball performance, people are definitely counting down the days until it comes out.
