WeKnowTheSongOfSummer17: I’m The One

April 29, 2017

For the last four days, since DJ Khaled made the announcement via Twitter on Monday, we’ve been counting down the minutes until the debut of DJ Khaled’s new single “I’m The One,” featuring Justin Bieber, Chance the Rapper, Lil Wayne, and Quavo from Migos.

Finally, very early this morning, while most of us were soundly asleep, the moment we’ve been waiting for finally arrived when “I’m The One” and its music video dropped on YouTube and all of our favorite streaming services.  Now, I can’t stop watching Justin Bieber and Chance the Rapper dance along the song in the video (and listening to the song on repeat when I’m supposed to be working).  If I’m not mistaken, I think we’ve got what will soon become the song of summer 2017.

The song takes aspects of each artist’s style and blends it into one mega hit.  We have DJ Khaled giving his signature “we the best,” “another one” and “DJ Khaled” catchphrases to intro the song.  We have Justin Bieber with his laidback tone that’s been characteristic of his recent music. We have Chance the Rapper with his classic “no label” mention. We have Quavo working in “rain drops” to give us a dose of Migos and “Bad and Boujee.”  And finally, we have Lil Wayne referring to himself as Tunechi in addition to his trademark voice.

“I’m the One” is a different sound for DJ Khaled.  Its carefree beat makes it a perfect song for the approaching warmer months and a strong contender to be this year’s summer anthem. As a whole, the song reminds us more of something Chance would release, but seeing as the two have worked together in the past, in addition to on this song, it wouldn’t be surprising if his style rubbed off on Khaled.  It has a cheeriness that we didn’t expect, yet have fully embraced.

Justin Bieber is the one who ties this whole song together.  His voice complements the beat behind it and somehow provides an easy link between each of the verses despite the very unique sounds of each of the other three featured artists.

Recently, Justin Bieber seems to be the king of collaborations.  His remix of Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito” propelled the song to number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart making it the first mostly Spanish-language song to crack the top 10 in over 20 years.  The diversity of the artists and styles of music that he collaborates with speaks to his immense talent and skill as a musician and makes us excited for whatever will come next for him and his new music.

In addition to Bieber, Chance the Rapper shines in “I’m The One”.  He flawlessly flows between his usual combination of singing and rapping.  He brings an originality to his verse with his ability to give a unique beat to the song while he raps, yet still making the song sound good and adhering to the overall rhythm.  In an already great song, Chance and his verse manage to stand out.

If just listening to the song somehow, miraculously, doesn’t make you fall in love with, watching the music video definitely will.  The vast majority of it features DJ Khaled, Justin Bieber, Chance the Rapper, Quavo (and briefly all of Migos), and Lil Wayne dancing in a garden or at one of two swimming pools.  Chano and Bieber steal the show with their dance moves.  Bieber, in particular, looks like he’s having a good time as he bops around and appears to be very happy.  I can’t say I blame him though, as this crew seems to have come together for the ultimate dance party (in addition to filming a music video, of course).  Ultimately, the video matches the upbeat nature of the song.  The only thing that could make it better is if I score an invite to the next time this group hangs out.  With little hope of that, I’ll have to settle for listening to “I’m The One” on repeat for the next couple of months.

It looks like I’m not the only one showing love to “I’m The One”.  The song quickly soared to #1 on iTunes in countries all over the world.  We Know the DJ’s very own DJ Tay James showed his love for the song as well along with his support for Justin Bieber.
