Awards season is upon us, friends. You know what that means: killer performances, amazing live collabs, and our favorites getting recognized for all of their great music.

The iHeartRadio Music Awards for 2017 were absolutely no exception. I find the iHeartRadio awards a bit more accessible to the average music fan, with both traditional and standard categories. I also think it’s really awesome they have some fan voted categories, making the fans/viewers more involved in the show itself. The award show covers many genres of music, but focuses on mostly mainstream music of all genres, and what is being played on mainstream radio stations across the country.

The awards themselves were held on March 5th, 2017 at The Forum in Inglewood, CA and hosted by the man himself, Ryan Seacrest. The performers included acts like: Bruno Mars performing ‘Treasure’ and ‘That’s What I Like’, Ed Sheeran performing ‘Shape of You’ and ‘Castle on the Hill’, and my personal favorite, The Chainsmokers and Chris Martin performing ‘Paris’ and ‘Something Just Like This’. Here’s the breakdown of my favorite performances!

Bruno Mars

Bruno Mars performed after receiving the Innovator Award at this year’s awards. As always, Bruno’s performance did not disappoint. I appreciated the bit of a throwback with “Treasure”, and the 90s R&B vibes of “That’s What I Like”. I’ve always appreciated how Bruno can combine so many sounds and create some truly unique music.

Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran performed the first 2 singles off of his brand new album, “÷”, ‘Shape of You’ and ‘Castle on the Hill’. This is the first time I heard either of these songs performed live by Sheeran, and I think he did such a great job. I’m always so amazed by solo performers that can sing, and in the case of Sheeran for ‘Shape of You’, play multiple instruments at one time. He did it, and he did it well. He was joined by a full band for the performance of ‘Castle on the Hill’ and it was just as magical.

The Chainsmokers and Chris Martin

Honestly, how can you not like The Chainsmokers?! They are taking the mainstream EDM and pop worlds by storm, and have released fire track after fire track. The newest set of tracks are featuring Coldplay’s Chris Martin singing vocals and are ‘Paris’ and ‘Something Just Like This’. If you haven’t heard these tracks by now, you may be living under a rock, but that’s totally fine, just don’t sleep on the tracks any longer! The Chainsmokers bring their catchy and infectious beats, and Chris Martin brings his amazing vocals to these tracks. The performance was exactly what I expected – on point and a quality performance. I think they really stole the show.

As for the awards themselves, I was surprised at some of the winners, but all the artists deserved their awards, hands down. Some of the awards I was excited about:

Best Duo/Group of the Year – twenty one pilots

Best New Pop Artist: The Chainsmokers

Alternative Rock Album of the Year: twenty one pilot’s Blurryface

Best New Hip Hop Artist – Chance the Rapper

R&B Album of the Year – Rihanna’s Anti

And if you missed the show yourself, here is the full list of winners from every category.
