I know we are all familiar with Ed Sheeran at this point. He isn’t new to the music spotlight, and how could he be with the some of the music he has put out?! I have written on his music a few times before (you can check them out here and here!) and for good reason. There is a reason everyone knows who Ed Sheeran is, and it’s because he’s good.

His genre of music isn’t what I usually listen to, but you should appreciate when a true talent like Sheeran comes along. All the hype about his new album, ‘÷’, is for good reason. The album was released a few days ago, and I’ve been listening consistently since its release. This new album is a mix of sounds that we have come to know and love from Sheeran himself, but all with a new twist. And don’t get scared at this though – the new batch of songs are as good, if not better than his previous music. The sounds are revisited, but in a refreshing way. The pop-rap we know from songs like “Sing” appear in songs like “Eraser” and “Galway Girl”. The slower, more emotional songs like “Thinking Out Loud” appear as songs like “Happier” and “Perfect” on this album. This is clearly a new album for him, and not just a rehashing of an old one. I am also very impressed with how cohesive the album is – the songs flow from one to another. The whole album is full of hits, and I really don’t think there is a dud on the album. That is saying a lot since the album clocks in at 16 songs long!

I think Sheeran paid a lot of attention to the craft of the music, and that shows. The album is a perfect representation of a great pop album: an enjoyable and accessible sound for everyone, catchy jams, and songs that everyone can appreciate or relate to in one way or another. I also think the folk inspired sound is something that the mainstream music scene lacks sometimes, and I appreciate that Sheeran is bringing it in a new way. I think the fusion blend of different sounds is not only really important for good music and to create something new, but also important to introduce people to other music that they would have not listened to otherwise.

Overall, I think ‘÷’ is very well done and packs a serious punch. There is a little bit of something for everyone, and it’s bound to be a hit album. I think it’ll be one of the greatest pop albums of 2017, and one that will make it’s mark on history.

What do you think of the new album? What are some of your favorite songs? Mine are: “Castle On The Hill”, “Perfect” and “Happier”. But then again, every song is pretty dang good.
