Incubus isn’t new to the music scene by any means. The alt-rock band from California was formed probably before most of us reading this were even born (forming in 1991). Most of us probably know their song ‘Drive’, or would at least find it familiar if it were to come on somewhere. With seven albums under their belt, they kinda know what they are doing at this point. I find some of their earlier work really represents the 90s/2000s era that they were pretty active in. Incubus have faded in and out of the spotlight, but are multi-platinum artists, and have many hit songs and albums. Their last album, If Not Now, When?, was released in 2011. Although it doesn’t seem like that long, this is the longest period of time in between releases for the band.

Earlier this week it was announced that the band will be releasing their eighth studio album at some point this year. Not much information is known at this point, but we do know that Skrillex has had some influence on the album. It was also said that the album will be guitar heavy, and “will not be mellow”. Being fairly familiar with the work of Skrillex, this makes a lot of sense. His work as a DJ and producer is guitar and bass heavy. And if you didn’t know, Skrillex (or Sonny Moore), has reunited with his emo-alt band, From First To Last. From First To Last is definitely  more of the style of music that I listen to, and more similar to the music of Incubus. Check out a single from From First To Last, with Skrillex back as member.

I think this collaboration is going to be very interesting, and could add a bit of heaviness to the new Incubus album. A few details about the album are floating around the internet that make me really excited about the release. The first single from the album is called ‘Nimble Bastard’ and will première on The Kevin & Bean Show on KROQ in LA on February 16th. From what people have heard, they say the album will range in sounds, but not in a bad way. They say the album will have heavier songs, but also more pop/mainstream radio sensible songs. The album is said to tap on Incubus’ signature strong bass lines, but tie in heavier guitar parts than the band has used before. It is also hinted that Skrillex had a hand in a song (maybe a feature on a track?!). There isn’t much else information, like the track list or what other songs will sound like. But it has been hinted that the album will drop around April, and the band will embark on a headlining tour this summer.

I find the mystery of what the new album will sound like pretty intriguing, and I’m excited to see what direction the band will take!
