WeKnowTheDJ Artist Spotlight: Marshmello

This week on WeKnowTheDJ, we are spotlighting EDM producer and DJ, Marshmello. In the style of other masked DJs, like Daft Punk and Deadmau5, Marshmello wears a mask to hide his identity. The mask is a marshmallow, of course, with a face drawn on. The artist wears all white, and my question is, how does he keep that outfit so clean?! This DJ’s identity isn’t known for sure, but people have guessed that it could be DJ Chris Comstock. Chris Comstock is an American DJ and producer, and is also known as Dotcom. I like the little bit of mystery in not knowing the exact identity of Marshmello, I think it all adds to the intrigue.

Even though we don’t know the exact identity of Marshmello, he has been internationally recognized for his remixes and his original tracks. Marshmello creates music best described as future bass, future house, progressive house, or trap. I find this style of music very energizing and progressive, and seriously a lot of fun to listen and dance to. Some of his best known remixes are of Zedd’s “Beautiful Now” and Jack Ü’s “Where Are Ü Now”. Recently, he has released a remix of DJ Snake and Justin Bieber’s “Let Me Love You”. The original track is a personal favorite of mine, but I find the remix even better. It’s the perfect example of what a remix should do – make a great track even better.

Of course, Marshmello’s original tracks are to be mentioned too. Joytime, the artist’s debut album, was self-released in 2016. The album did considerably well, and ended up peaking at number five on Billboard’s electronic and dance chart. The album is very well rounded for an EDM album, and is a great listen all the way through.

This past October, Marshmello was debuted on Skrillex’s own label, OWSLA. The first track released was “Ritual”, which features the artist Wrabel on the track. I think, all and all, this is my favorite original track from the DJ and producer. It’s just catchy!

Want to catch Marshmello live? The Ritual Tour that has been happening the past few months is wrapping up, but luckily for you, the artists has released some tour dates! Marshmello is playing a bunch of shows in Europe and a few scattered dates here in the US. He is also playing a few festivals, including Coachella. Have no fear, my friends, I don’t see Marshmello slowing down any time soon, and I expect another tour to be announced fairly soon.

Overall, I am very impressed with the craftsmanship of Marshmello’s work, even despite being fairly new to the scene, and I find him perfect for a spotlight on WeKnowTheDJ!

What do you think of Marshmello’s music? Do you have a favorite track? Be sure to let us know on Twitter @weknowthedj!
