The 7 New Artists You Need to Know in 2017

January 15, 2017

It’s hard to believe that New Year’s was just two weeks ago. If you’re anything like me, you’ve already forgotten all about your resolutions and you’ve haven’t gone to the gym more than three times or maintained a healthy diet. So, even though it doesn’t seem like 2017 is going to be the year where I change my ways, it does seem like its going to a great year for music, even though music from 2016 is a tough act to follow.

In 2016, the world was blessed with incredible new music from albums like Anti, Life of Pablo, Lemonade, Views, Coloring Book, and 4 Your Eyez only (just to name a few). Songs like “Closer,” “Let Me Love You,” and “Can’t Stop the Feeling” kept us dancing all year long and reminded us that listening to good music is important for maintaining some of our sanity in this crazy world we live in.

While all of our favorite artists will, hopefully, continue to impress us in 2017, there are also several new artists that you should look out for in this New Year. There are more than a few new artists who are talented, but there’s no way we could ever name them all. So, here are the seven new artists that everyone needs to check out (trust me, you’ll thank me later):

1. The Knocks

If you don’t already know about this DJ duo, made up of Ben “DJ B-Roc” Ruttner and James “JPatt” Patterson, it’ about time you got with the program. While performing as the opening act on the European leg of Justin Bieber’s Purpose Tour, the Knocks released their current single “Heat”, which features vocals from Sam Nelson Harris, the lead singer of the X Ambassadors. Their new EP, Testify, is set to be released sometime in the near future, but they give fans a taste of what’s to come when they released the song “Trouble” just this week. If that wasn’t already enough, the duo are set to head out on their own tour starting in early February. I’m hoping to be at their New York City show, and if you’re smart, you’ll make sure to see them at the stop closest to you.

2. Julia Michaels

Julia Michaels may currently be one of the biggest songwriters in Hollywood, but it looks like it’s only a matter of time before the world recognizes her vocal talents as well. In 2016 she performed at the closing ceremonies of the Rio Olympics with Kygo for their song “Carry Me” and was revealed to be the vocals featured in the beginning part of Justin Bieber’s “Sorry”. On January 12, though, she dropped her debut single “Issues”, and with the song’s catchy lyrics and ridiculously relatable lyrics, it’s definitely going to be a hit. Get ready to hear a lot more about Julia Michaels.

3. D.R.A.M.

In 2016 we were introduced to D.R.A.M. and his hit song “Broccolli”. His upbeat personality coupled with his positive beats and raps propelled him to success that will only be furthered in 2017. He’s even got the seal of approval from Queen Bey herself, for she posted a video of herself dancing to his song “Cha Cha”. No doubt – this guy is going to be big.

4. JP Cooper

Speaking of artists with upbeat songs, you have to check out JP Cooper. Every time I hear his voice on Jonas Blue’s “Perfect Strangers” I can’t help but be in a good mood. In addition, his solo single “September Song” will instantly melt your heart as Cooper sings about young love lost. The acoustic version of the song is mesmerizing, but the original version feels more carefree and its beat will leave you with a small smile on your face even when the song is over.

5. Justine Skye

Justine Skye is going to use the momentum from her killer end of 2016 to make herself someone you need to watch out for in 2017. Not only is her song “U Don’t Know” ft. Wizkid still doing well, but she also dropped a sick EP entitled “8 Ounces” on December 23. Her sound ranges from sultry to powerhouse proving her talent and showing that she’s a strong artist here to stay.

6. Emily Warren

Whether you know it or not, you’ve probably heard a song with Emily Warren in the last few days. After a lot of speculation, it was revealed that she is the female vocalist on the Chainsmoker’s new song “Paris”. This isn’t the first time I’ve written about Emily Warren. Like Julia Michaels, she is a talent songwriter with strong vocals. Her song “Capsize” with Frenship shows her more serious side, but she is also featured on the Lost Kings play song “Phone Down”. Having her vocals featured on a song with The Chainsmokers is sure to introduce Emily Warren to a huge audience, but her talent is what’s going to make her a household name.

7. Lost Kings

Rob Gainley and Nick Shanholtz met back in 2014 and now make up the DJ duo Lost Kings. If this duo reminds you a bit of The Chainsmokers don’t be surprised for they do have the same representation.   Yet when you take the time to listen to a good amount of their music, you can see that their sound is different and quite unique. Their song “Phone Down” with Emily Warren is beginning to get a lot of requests on the radio. It’s only a matter of time before this duo makes it big, and hopefully their messaging encouraging people to unplug will rise along with their fame.
