Yesterday, the 2017 Grammy nominations were revealed, and once again we were reminded that this is Beyoncé’s world and we’re all just living in it.

Queen B racked up a total of nine nominations including Record of the Year, Album of the Year, and Song of the Year, among others.  Drake, Kanye West, and Rihanna all followed closely behind Beyoncé with a total of 8 nominations each.

Adele is another artist near the top of the list for most nominations for the 2017 Grammy Awards.  This superstar artist received 5 nominations in total for this year’s awards in many of this year’s top categories.  For 4 of her 5 nominations, she will be up against Beyoncé, and in each category, the competition is stiff.  In her 18 previous nominations, she won 10 times, making her odds of winning at least one award pretty good.  Yet there’s no sure thing when it comes to winning a Grammy.

These Grammy nominations have made history.  Back in June, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, the organization responsible for choosing Grammy nominations, announced that they would begin to consider streaming-only releases for Grammy nominations moving forward.  This change was made in response to a petition that began to circulate after Chance the Rapper released his newest mixtape for free and only on streaming services.  People were frustrated that just because Chance made his music available to fans for free, he was no longer eligible to be nominated for a Grammy.  Now that the change has been made, Chance the Rapper has received proper recognition for his talent and work from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences in the form of 7 nominations for this year’s Grammy Awards.  As if this outstanding number of nominations wasn’t enough, Chance has also become a historic figure for being the first ever artist to receive a nomination for a streaming-only artist.  He has paved the way for many independent musicians by showing them you can make your own rules and still become a Grammy nominated artist.  Only time will tell if this credential will transform to Grammy winning artist…

And how could we talk about the Grammy nominations without talking about Justin Bieber?  Bieber has spoken at length about how much his most recent album, Purpose¸ has meant to him.  He, admittedly, lost his way for a couple of years before changing his tune and transforming into a more mature and more reflective man.  Purpose told the story of how he found his way.  Justin Bieber showed us that with strength, courage, and a lot of hard work, you can pull out of the darkness and move on to something great.  After debuting at number one on the US Billboard 200, having three singles reach number on the charts, and breaking record multiple records, it’s impossible to deny Purpose’s success.  Now, Bieber can add to that list of success with 4 Grammy nominations for Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop Solo Performance, and Best Pop Vocal Album.  Bieber won his first in 2016 for “Where Are Ü Now” in the Best Dance Recording Category and has been nominated three times previous to this year’s awards.  In just one day, Bieber has doubled the number of nomination he’s received and confirmed, once again, that he is truly a great artist and talented performer.

The winner of Grammy Awards are notoriously unpredictable, so I won’t bother you all with my guesses of who will walk away with that trophy in each category.  I guess we’ll all just have to tune in on February 12th to find out.
