The 2016 European Music Awards, hosted by Bebe Rexha, took place in Rotterdam on Sunday (Nov. 6). The stage was home to many good, bad, and…. entertaining moments. There were 11 performances, and they were all unique in many ways, whether that be through lyric-changes or extravagant props. Let’s recap:

Bebe Rexha’s Performance of “I Got You” and Awkward Twerking

Unfortunately, Bebe Rexha’s solo performance was not as big of a crowd-pleaser as she had probably hoped. As she danced around with a huge, furry “U,” it was quite an unusual sight. Nonetheless, it was entertaining, just like the moment when she began twerking!

Martin Garrix and Bebe Rexha’s Performance of “In the Name of Love”

On the other hand, Bebe Rexha’s performance with Martin Garrix was certainly worth the watch. Their hit song “In the Name of Love” never gets old, and this stripped-down live version was just as good. Garrix, recently crowned DJ Mag’s 2016 Top DJ, played the electric guitar while Rexha sang.

Shawn Mendes’ Winnings and Performance of “Mercy”

Shawn Mendes took the stage to sing his latest hit single “Mercy.” He started his performance out slowly but emotionally as he brought out the piano, but it eventually morphed into a much more upbeat setup accompanied by a band. He left the show with a winning performance and two awards. With his soothing vocals and undeniable charm, it’s hard to not love a Shawn Mendes performance.

DNCE’s Performance of “Body Work” and “Cake By the Ocean”

It seems like everyone accidentally catches themselves singing the lyrics to “Cake By the Ocean.” Their live performance of that hit song as well as “Body Work” was certainly interesting AND entertaining. As they stood on a platform hanging above the audience, there were inflatable donuts and pizza being passed around below them.

Justin Bieber’s Big Win

Whenever Justin Bieber wins an award, or doesn’t win an award, fans on Twitter go absolutely wild. Though Bieber lost Best Male, he still reigned victorious in three other categories: Best Canadian Act, Biggest Fans Award, and Best Song. He was not in attendance, but he was extremely grateful for his winnings, as shown by his tweet below.

Green Day Accept Global Icon Award

Green Day first took the stage to perform their song “Bang Bang,” then went on to accept their Global Icon Award. Throughout the night, they were sure to throw in jabs towards the United State’s presidential election. “Most of all, it’s nice to be out of America just for a second because of this horrendous election that’s going on right now. Our entire country is about to have one big, collective heart attack,” Billie Joe Armstrong said. Later on, when they played their old but still extremely well-loved song “American Idiot,” it was clear what message they were trying to send. As if the song title wasn’t enough, Armstrong made sure to change the lyrics to say, “Can you hear the sound of hysteria? / The subliminal mind-Trump America.”

This political expression can also be seen in the following Instagram post:

Overall, the EMAs were filled with buzz-worthy events, and we can’t want to see what happens next year.
