June 29, 2014

Capital FM’s biggest annual pop bash took place last Saturday, packing 80,000 diehard music fans into London’s Wembley Arena for one stellar lineup. The charts seemed to come alive for the Summertime Ball, as lucky ticket holders were given the chance to see some of today’s hottest acts hit the stage and perform their latest hits.

Emerging onto the Wembley stage amidst deafening roars of approval from the crowd came Pharrell Williams; David Guetta; Ellie Goulding; Miley Cyrus; Calvin Harris; Enrique Iglesias; Cheryl Cole; 5 Seconds of Summer; Ed Sheeran; Rita Ora; The Vamps; Jessie J; Sam Smith; Union J; Little Mix; Clean Bandit; Duke Dumont; Austin Mahone; Ella Henderson; Iggy Azalea; Kiesza; and Rixton.

Some of the highlights of the show included the sets by Calvin Harris and David Guetta, both of which added enormous energy to the venue that the crowd simply devoured. 5 Seconds of Summer performed their smash hit “She Looks So Perfect” along with their latest single, “Don’t Stop”. To top it off, the Australian cuties gave a confection of a cover with Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream”.

Teen crooner Austin Mahone put on a show to please his legions of Mahomies with the song “Mmm Yeah”, whilst Clean Bandit performed their charttopper, “Rather Be”.

Ed Sheeran was monumental as usual, moving the crowd with six stunning performances. Using only the aid of his guitar, he treated the crowds with familiar hits “Lego House”, “The A Team”, “You Need Me, I Don’t Need You”, and “Sing”, and introduced the soulful ballad “Thinking Out Loud” and bold anthem “Don’t”.

Ellie Goulding was London’s pop princess, performing some of her biggest hits to the crowd’s very vocal delight. Her set list included “Anything Could Happen”, “Burn”, “I Need Your Love”, and “Goodness Gracious”.

Iggy Azalea and Enrique Iglesias were both all about the fans, performing their respective smash hits and feeding off the consequent energy from the very delighted crowds. Iggy was joined onstage by Britain’s own Charli XCX for a rendition of their breakout summer anthem “Fancy”, whilst Enrique wowed Wembley with his performances of familiar hits “Tonight (I’m Loving You)”, “I Like It”, “I’m a Freak”, and “There Goes My Baby”.

Jessie J was joined by DJ Cassidy and The Wanted’s Nathan Sykes for a performance of “Calling All Hearts”, whilst Little Mix were showstoppers with their hits “Salute” and “Move”. Miley Cyrus was feisty, edgy and wowing as always, sending the crowds into a frenzy with “We Can’t Stop”, “Wrecking Ball” and “Party in the USA”.

Wembley was all smiles during Pharrell’s performance of “Happy”, aided by his renditions of “Get Lucky”, “Blurred Lines”, “Marilyn Monroe”, and “Frontin’”, and Rita Ora sent the energy through the clouds with her performances of “I Will Never Let You Down” and “How We Do (Party and BS)”.

Overall, the 2014 Summertime Ball was one for the books. Those lucky enough to score tickets to the annual gig were graced with nonstop smash performances from a red-hot lineup of today’s pop phenomenons. With the unbeatable display of talent as the charts came to life, Capital FM will have a notably difficult time topping this year’s ball when June 2015 rolls around. May the pop music odds be ever in their favor.
