Rihanna Parts Ways With Def Jam

May 7, 2014

Rumors were swirling Monday, May 5 that ‘Unapologetic’ singer, Rihanna was no longer with record label, Def Jam. The rumor was sparked when Complex pointed out that Rihanna was listed under the  Legacy section of the website versus the normal artist directory. Rihanna is now signed with longtime friend and Roc Nation president, Jay-Z.

Confirmed by Billboard, the partnership took place back in April of 2013 when Jay-Z took his label, and partnered with Universal Music. This announcement should not come to a shock to many as Jay-Z and Rihanna have been friends for years. Jay-Z is also responsible for bringing Rihanna onto the scene in 2005 when he worked at Def Jam himself, before leaving in 2009 to start Roc Nation.

Under her Def Jam contract, Rihanna released a total of seven albums including: Talk That Talk, Good Girl Gone Bad, and A Girl Like Me. Although Rihanna is no longer apart of the label Def Jam, they will still play a role in her upcoming albums but it is still unclear if they will appear on her new albums. New music is expected and Def Jam will help promote longtime client Rihanna.

While leaving Def Jam, Rihanna parts ways with artist like: Big Sean, Frank Ocean, Iggy Azalea, Kanye West, and Jhene Aiko. Many of whom, on the label she has even collaborated with in that past.

With new music soon to be released, we can only wonder who Rihanna will collaborate with next? Possibly one of the artists that she will join in the Roc Nation family? J. Cole, Rita Ora (which I would love to see!), or Jay Electronica.. Only time will tell and her fans are anxious to see what will come for the star in the very near future.
