As the first single off her next album The Pink Print, Nicki released the smooth rolling track “Pills N Potions.”

Produced by Dr. Luke, the track airs out a sincere vibe that may have been lacking in many of Nicki’s earlier releases. “Pills N Potions” offers up a continued drum roll in the background, supported by Minaj winging between rap and song.

“Even though you’re out here lookin’ so ungrateful/Im’ma keep it moving/Keep it classy and graceful/ I told him it’s no friends in the game/you ain’t learned that yet/All the bridges you came over don’t burn that yet” she raps as advice to someone dear to her heart, letting them know she still loves them but is still giving warning of consequences.

The forgiving nature of this track translates into Nicki’s belief that people change but love remains forever. “Pills N Potions” stands for all the different ways we can medicate ourselves. Whether literal medicine, illicit drugs and alcohol or just a way you cope with your emotions, you depend on these “Pills N Potions” to forget the hurt.

The outlining of the track may seem dark, but Nicki urges you to believe love can transcend all as she sings, “I still love, I still love, I still love, I still love, I still love you.” during the hook

Nicki took to Twitter to share her thoughts on the single and upcoming album…

After lying low for most of 2013, it’s about time we get this release from Minaj. So with new year we are introduced to a new soft-spoken Nicki without the glitz and glam. She’s traded in her green hair for a much more subtle look, hoping to draw more attention to her music. Her last album released dates back to Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. When asked about the new album dropping at the end of this year, Minaj said, “The Pink Print will remind people why they fell in love with Nicki Minaj. And I think that needs to be done.”
