Coachella 2014: Weekend 1 Review

April 16, 2014

No. Yes. Yes. Those are my responses (in order) to the three questions that I’m sure you’re wondering before I even begin writing this: 1.) NO, I didn’t get to Coachella this year 2.) YES, I’m still extremely bitter about it 3.) YES, I will make it a priority to be in attendance at next year’s festival when I am permanently settled in California. Of all the music festivals that I’ve ever attended, this year’s Coachella lineup definitely made me feel like I should’ve just saved up all that ticket money and headed out to Indio for the weekend! Truth be told, they had me sold with an Outkast reunion on the schedule alone! Some of the other big names on the lineup included: Zedd, Ellie Goulding, Girl Talk, Haim, Bastille, Calvin Harris, Nas, KiD CuDi, Chance the Rapper and so many more. I could just list all of the big names from the festival and this article would write itself, but instead, I’ve provided some highlights from the first explosive weekend for your viewing pleasure:

Chance the Rapper Brings Out Justin Bieber

Oh no no, Oh no no Chance you didn’t. Bringing out JB is a surefire way to elicit the most energy from a large Coachella crowd, and Chance knew exactly what he was doing with this guest appearance. Anyone who’s ever been to a Chance concert knows that he keeps the energy level of his shows at a constant high, and he made no exceptions with this surprise.

Solange Brings Out a Dancing Beyoncé to Wrap Things Up

Sure, when I heard about this one, some tears were shed. As if marrying Jay-Z wasn’t enough to break my heart, she had to go and dance for a crowd of people that I wasn’t in…

Pharrell’s Entire Star Studded Set

One of the fan favorites of the weekend, Pharrell managed to welcome friends: Gwen Stefani, Busta Rhymes, Nelly and Snoop Dogg to share the stage with him throughout his awesome set.

Nas Brings out Jay-Z

Two legends on one stage; there isn’t much more to be said here folks.

Outkast’s Entire Set

While Outkast caught a lot of flak for ending the first night of the festival on what some criticized as a “low-energy” set, I don’t understand how anything negative can be said about one of the greatest on-stage reunions of one of the greatest duos in music history! So just sit back and enjoy this, I promise you’ll feel like you’re back in the 90’s, overalls and all!

Disclosure – Latch

MGMT – Electric Feel (this one just brings out that festival vibe!)

Ellie Goulding’s Entire Set

Lorde’s Entire Set

Be sure to tweet us @weknowthedj and let us know what some of your favorite acts from Coachella were, and whom you’d like to see perform next year. Also, let us know if you’re making it out there for the 2nd weekend…on second thought, don’t do that, I’m still bitter about the whole “living on the opposite coast” thing.
