Billboard.com is known internationally as a source for music charts, news, events, and more. Perhaps their most widely known part of the website is the Billboard Top 100. This chart is produced every Monday based upon the previous weeks’ chart location, radio play, online streaming, and sales. Around the world this chart is utilized as a source of determining the most popular songs of the week. Whether a song is a forerunner in the top 10 or a newly emerging song down in the 90’s, this chart is a great way for music lovers to decipher what’s popular. This week, the Top 10 songs range from Beyonce to John Legend.

Starting us off at number 10 is Timber by Pitbull featuring Ke$ha. According to the chart’s legends this song has been on the chart for 21 weeks now, and has remained at number 10 for the past two weeks. This song reminds summertime and makes me dance every time it comes on. Pitbull’s rapping infused with Ke$ha’s overwhelming pop style created the perfect mix for a hit song. Timber is guaranteed to be one of those songs that always gets stuck in your head.

Next on the list at number 9 is Say Something by A Great Big World and Christina Aguilera.  According to the chart it dropped two spots this week.  If you haven’t heard it yet, the best way to describe it is a song of passion. The lyrics cry out “Anywhere I would’ve followed you. Say something, I’m giving up on you”. It’s a slow ballad dedicated to lost love. Therefore, it is definitely universally relatable.

Next coming in at number 8 is Counting Stars by One Republic. This week it moved up one spot from number nine, and according to the chart’s legends it’s the longest reigning song on this week’s top 10, after being featured on the Hot 100 chart for the past 37 weeks. The song has a soft rock tune to it, as typically most One Republic songs do.  In my opinion the lyrics speak for themselves “Everything that kills me makes me feel alive”. This song is obviously going to remain a hit, especially since it’s been featured on the chart for this long. If you haven’t heard it by now I recommend that you do because it’s definitely one of One Republic’s best!

Coming in at number 7 is the spectacular Beyonce with Drunk in Love featuring Jay Z. It’s dropped two spots since last week, but don’t let that cloud your judgment on how truly spectacular this song is. I’d say that this is the most popular song off of Beyonce’s self title album that was released without notice this past December. Beyonce’s sassiness paired with her hubby’s lyrical genius never fails to create a fan favorite and a massive hit. If you already love this song, be on the lookout for more from Beyonce because the rest of her album is just as spectacular as this song!

Next at number 6 is Team by Lorde. For those who said she was only going to be a one hit wonder- you were wrong! This song has moved up one spot since last week and is currently at the highest position it’s been at yet. I think part of the reason we are so obsessed with Lorde is because of the fact that her style is so new and refreshing. The song is about not giving up and proving your worth, the lyrics explain, “I’m kind of over getting told to throw my hands up in the air, so there”.  I see Lorde as a fighter, and I don’t see her going anywhere soon! Bring on some more hits for us Lorde!

Next at number 5 is Pompeii by Bastille. Moving up one spot since last week, its popularity seems to be steadily increasing over the past 29 weeks it’s been featured on the chart. The lead singer Daniel Smith described the song’s meaning as a metaphor for someone who is standing and essentially watching their life fall to pieces. The lyrics explain, “But if you close your eyes, does it almost feel like nothing changed at all?” The song has a catchy tune and the chorus will most likely get stuck in your head. Be on the lookout for more from them because I definitely see Bastille as a rising new group.

Narrowing in at number 4 is All of Me By John Legend. It’s remained at its peak position of number 4 for the past few weeks. It’s described as a piano ballad with a strong chorus. The song which is both sweet and romantic is said to be dedicated to Legend’s wife. “’Cause all of me love all of you” the lyrics explain. It’s a love song about loving someone’s imperfections and being deeply and madly in love. I’d say that it’d be a perfect wedding song.

And now on to our top three! Number 3 is Talk Dirty by Jason Derulo. This song (like number 4) has also remained here at its peak position for the past two weeks. It’s a little different from Jason’s previous work, but in a good way. He took his usual pop style and infused a little jazz into this song, it’s the perfect mixture in my opinion. The song is basically about traveling to a foreign land and not knowing the language, but still being able to flirt. It’s a great dance song, and the percussion sounds from the chorus will most certainly get stuck in your head. I hope to see more new songs like this from Jason in the future!

Coming in at number 2 is Katy Perry with Dark Horse. After previously being featured at number 1, Dark Horse has now remained at number 2 for the past few weeks. It’s the leadoff and hit single off of Katy’s newest album titled Prism. The song is about a woman whose love is like a spell, once she sets her eyes on someone they’re not going anywhere and she’s going to have control over them. It’s a very upbeat song with a lot of bass, and if you like it you should check out some of the other songs on her new album because all the others are just as spectacular.

Drum roll please…..Billboard’s number 1 song of the week is…….Happy by Pharrell Williams! It’s remained in the top spot for the past two weeks AND it’s the newest song on this entire list! It’s an upbeat song with a fun tune, there’s no reason it should be anything less than number one! Pharrell has such a refreshing sound, and his music is just so happy. I think it’s a perfect song for spring time, as the grass begins to turn green again and flowers start to bloom. This song is about sharing a smile and making the world a happy place. This song just gives off such a feel-good vibe, it’s the perfect fit for the top spot!
