March 2 marked the 86th annual Academy Awards. Hosted by notorious funny woman Ellen, the show was legendary. From Ellen being the first host to order pizza for the stars, to unexpected awards won.

Considering there were more than twenty awards distributed, listing every one of them would be incredibly time consuming. Instead, I will recap the night’s biggest awards, best speeches, and more!

Kicking things off is the top winner of the night! With a total of seven Oscars, the film “Gravity” exceeded expectations. Winning awards for: Best Film Editing, Best Directing, Best Visual Effects, and Best Cinematography this film shocked viewers everywhere. Directed by Alfonso Cuaron, the movie was a hit! Being as though I have not seen it, you can understand the desire to now!

“12 Years a Slave” not only won Best Picture, and Best Adapted Screenplay. But it also won Best Supporting Actress. Lupita Nyong’o, who showed up to the Oscar’s in a stunning baby blue gown gave an emotional and heart felt speech. Upon receiving her award she said: “As I look down at this golden statue, may it remind me and every other little child that your dreams are valid.” Her speech offered a beacon of hope to children everywhere, no matter what their goal in life.

In the running for Best Actor in a Leading Role were names like: Christian Bale, Matthew McConaughey, Leonardio DiCaprio, and Chiwetel Ejiofer. All of whom played phenomenal roles in their films. Taking home the coveted gold man in this category was Matthew McConaughey, for his role in “Dallas Buyers Club”. His speech was not only memorable, but amazing. Giving recognition to all of the nominees, paying respect to his father, and even throwing in the infamous “Alright, alright, alright.” Encompassing many different emotions all in one speech was well thought out and let Matthew express himself well.

Upon accepting the award, song writers Kristen Anderson-Lopez and husband Robert Lopez turned their speech into a fun rhyme. Making things fun and even hinting at a “Frozen 2” this speech could not have been cuter.

Not coming as a shock to many with him sweeping through other award shows for this role, it was his speech that captivated many. Thanking his mother by saying: “I love you mom. Thank you for teaching me how to dream.” Also thanking his brother, and costars his speech wins hearts everywhere and is definitely personal.

Straying from the awards for a moment, let’s talk about the host. Ellen did a magnificent job hosting this show. Lightening to mood by cracking jokes constantly, to at one point asking the audience who would eat pizza if she ordered it. This question asked hands went up here and there throughout the auditorium, and while we all thought this was a joke, to our surprise a pizza guy actually showed up!

Ellen even constructed the most retweeted selfie on Twitter with over three million retweets to date. The selfie includes stars like: Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Meryl Streep, and Brad Pitt. But with starts like that, how could it not be the most retweeted?!
