Season Premiere: “Dancing With The Stars”

March 22, 2014

I’m not going to lie – I’ve never been a big watcher of “Dancing With The Stars. I might flick it on if one of my faves is performing, a Kardashian is involved, or if it’s the only thing on…but generally on Mondays I’m already committed to “How I Met Your Mother.” When I heard that Cody Simpson was going to be a contestant this season, I knew in my heart I would need to show support. (I’ve been following Cody’s career and have made it my business to promote his ventures). The promise of a performance by Jason Derulo peaked my interest as well, as did Olympic Gold Medalists Charlie White and Meryl Davis.

And thus, I sat down and watched a DWTS season premiere for the very first time.

My first opinion: Jason Derulo was a great choice performer for the 18th season opener.  He gave a high-energy, semi-shirtless performance of “Talk Dirty,” which included both his own hip-hop dance crew, as well as help from the DWTS cast. His DWTS appearance was timed with the announcement that his new album “Talk Dirty,” which is set for release on April 15.

While the show sometimes gets a bad wrap and can be known for featuring has-been reality stars and washed-up artists, this season’s cast appeals more to my generation than past seasons. It’s a good mix of old stars and new. With fresh faces like 17-year-old Cody Simpson, and Fox Sports personality Erin Andrews on board, the changes should bring in some more views. Veteran stars include Danika McKellar (Winnie from “The Wonder Years”) and Candace Cameron Bure (D.J. Tanner from “Full House”). Also on the lineup is “The Real Housewives of Atlanta’s” NeNe Leakes, comedian Drew Carey, and Olympic ice dancers Charlie White and Meryl Davis.

The top two performances of the night went (fittingly) to White, and Bure’s dancing skills were a pleasant surprise to the judges. The most talked about performance of the night probably goes to Billy Dee whose ballroom routine was Star Wars themed. Partnered with Emma, who was dressed as Princess Leia, Billy Dee danced alongside some Stormtroopers, R2-D2, and even some Ewoks at the end. Watch the stand-out performance here.

To add drama, a new voting twist has been put in place: this season viewers will have the chance to vote for stars to switch partners mid-way through the season.

The first elimination for season 18 will take place next week, Monday at 8/7c on ABC. I’ll be watching and voting in support of Cody Simpson on most Mondays. Who will you be voting for? Tweet us @weknowtheDJ!
