Pharrell and Janelle Monae Slam Dunk 2014 NBA All-Stars Halftime Show

February 23, 2014

Who cares who won the basketball game? The clear All-Stars were Pharrell and Janelle Monae due to their amazing performances.

The New Year has been treating Pharrell very well, fresh off 4 Grammy wins last month.

He started the night started off by smashing hit after hit with the help of some very special guests. He opened with his song “Fountain” and then immediately brought out Nelly for “Hot In Here”. “I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me)” came next, and then Pharrell really pulled out all the stops.  Jay-Z, Busta Rhymes, and Diddy all joined in on “Pass the Rock This Way,” making the performance even better than it already was.

After a short intermission, Pharrell did a quick cover of Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” and N.E.R.D’s “Rock Star”. Snoop Dogg came for “Beautiful”, and then Pharrell ended his set with “Get Lucky” and his newest radio single “Happy” with all the surprise singers. Pharrell later tweeted (@Pharrell): “No words for how grateful I am these legends joined me 2nite #NBAAllstar @snoopdogg @iamdiddy @derrtymo @BustaRhymes” and attached the picture below.

Following a brief set by Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue, newcomer Janelle Monae appeared to heat things up. The 28 year-old from Atlanta sang “Electric Lady” with Gary Clark Jr., and closed with a performance of “Shining Star” featuring R&B/funk stars Earth, Wind & Fire. The musician, composer, and record producer tweeted (@JanelleMonae) after the show, “Thank y’all for the #allstar love!! New Orleans was truly gooooooood to us!! Love.” and “What a honor to share the stage w/ SO many extraordinary artists! @Tromboneshorty @akadrjohn @GaryClarkJr @EarthWindFire I’ll never forget!”

Hopefully in the future, the NBA Halftime show will continue to mix the new generation of artists with their older legend counterparts. After all, it has proved to work pretty well.
