The Top Reigning Women in Music Right Now

January 22, 2014

top women

2013 has been a huge year for music, but what is there to expect for 2014? Will the women who ruled the charts last year continue to do so this year? I’ve compiled a list of who I think are the top 10 biggest women in music right now- the people I just can’t get enough of!

top women1Starting off at number 10 is Lady Gaga. I feel like she was absent for the first half of the year, but that’s okay because she came back in full force towards the end of the year. While her newest album ‘Artpop’ didn’t enter the scene with as much hype as her previous three records, it’s still an amazing album. ‘Applause’ and ‘Do What U Want’ are two of Gaga’s biggest hits from this year- both which are constantly stuck in my head. I just hope that Gaga continues to do what she does best- empower women and inspire creativity.

top women2Next at number 9 is Selena Gomez. With the release of her first solo album ‘Stars Dance’ Selena proved that her music has grown up just as she has. The album featured hit songs like ‘Come and Get it’ and ‘Slow Down’ which stray away from her typical pop-rock sound and introduced a new EDM influence. I can honestly say that I’m in love with Stars Dance; my favorite track on the album is ‘Birthday’ just because it’s so different for her. I think she did a great job making the transition from child to adult star.  I can’t wait to see what she does in 2014!

Next at number 8 is Demi Lovato. With the release of her self-titled album, Demi once again took over the music scene. The first single off of the album ‘Heart Attack’ became her fastest selling single to date. With Demi no longer judging on The X Factor, she now has plenty of time to focus on her upcoming ‘Neon Lights’ tour. The tour kicks off February 9th – you should check and see if she’s coming to an arena near you because it’s guaranteed to be a great show!

top women 4Next on the list coming in at number 7 is Lana Del Rey. After a remixed version of her track ‘Summertime Sadness’ hit American radio stations this summer she essentially became an overnight success. You might also remember her from the soundtrack of The Great Gatsby with her hit ‘Young and Beautiful’. Lana’s music is typically noted for its unique cinematic sound. She claims that her music is influenced by stars like Elvis Presley and Janice Joplin- which I appreciate because her sound is definitely refreshing! Recently Lana announced that she will be releasing her third album titled ‘Ultraviolence’ this coming year- and my iPod can’t wait for it!

top women5Next on the list at number 6 is Katy Perry. Katy has been a huge star since 2007, but 2013 was an even bigger year for Katy. Back in October Katy released her fourth album titled ‘Prism’- her fastest selling album to date. I’d say that this album is different from her previous work, but still just as exceptional. I think this album shows Katy’s maturity, while still maintaining her energetic side. Even though this work is somewhat different than her typical style, her talent is still indubitable. I definitely can’t wait to see her on the Prism tour (which is kicking off this year) because she puts on an amazing show.

top women6Coming in next at number five is Ariana Grande. Previously known as Cat on Nickelodeon’s show Victorious, Ariana made her music debut in March of 2013 with the release of her first album ‘Yours Truly’. Some people claim that she sounds just like a younger Mariah Carey; however I argue that she is so much more than that. Ariana’s voice hits ranges I’ve never heard before, and after seeing her perform twice this past year I can vouch that her voice is not altered in anyway, she is pure talent. She is currently in the studio working on her second album. I foresee Ariana becoming a HUGE star this year, so definitely be on the lookout for more from her.

top women7Next on the list is Lorde at number 4. This seventeen year old became the first New Zealand woman to have a number one song in the US with her hit song ‘Royals’. Her debut album ‘Pure Heroine’ was released in September 2013, and received success worldwide. Being the youngest artist on this list she obviously has the greatest potential.  Be on the lookout for her at the Grammy’s this weekend- where she is nominated for three different awards (Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best Pop Vocal Album). Let’s hope that she becomes more than a one-hit wonder.

top women8Now this is where it got tough, deciphering between the top three. In my personal opinion I decided that Beyoncé was best fit for the third place spot. In December of 2013 Beyoncé released her fifth album ‘Beyoncé’ with essentially no notice or promotion. It goes without saying that obviously it broke all types of records. What astounds me that even without any type of promotion Beyoncé still ruled the charts, and I think that just proves how talented of an artist she is. With Beyoncé we can never expect anything less than extraordinary. I mean even my iPhone knows to autocorrect her name from Beyonce to Beyoncé. She is definitely one of the biggest icons for music in the 21st century.

top women9Coming in a close second is Taylor Swift. Notably known for her ability to write hit songs based off of previous relationships, there’s no doubt that she is a talented artist. To this day she remains my favorite concert I’ve ever attended. Taylor spent most of 2013 on tour for her fourth album ‘Red’ which produced numerous hit songs like ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together’, ‘I Knew You Were Trouble’, and ‘22’.  At the Grammy’s this weekend Taylor is nominated for ‘Best Country Album’ and ‘Album of the Year’. However I don’t really think that she should be classified as a country artist anymore, her music may have started out as country but lately she has been utilizing more of a pop influence. But nonetheless, she is still one of the most talented women in the industry; I think all of her awards prove that.

top women10And finally, coming in at number one is (drumroll please)…….Miley Cyrus! In 2013 Miley finally broke away from her pristine Disney image and released her fourth album ‘Bangerz’. Her new album, along with the music videos and performances associated with the album, has been very controversial but entertaining nonetheless. I think that Miley wanted to prove that she has grown up and grown out of the Disney child star image. Obviously something is working because two of her music videos (‘We Can’t Stop’ and ‘Wrecking Ball’) both broke Vevo records. I think that ‘Bangerz’ was the perfect way for Miley to break free of her child star days, while also creating the image she wanted to create for herself. Miley may be receiving a lot of controversy about her ‘twerking’ and her new image, but let’s be honest- you’re all watching and listening and you all love it.

Well there you have it- my top ten list of the most important women in music right now. Make sure you watch the Grammy’s this Sunday and keep an eye out for most of the people on this list. I can hardly wait to see what they bring to the table in 2014!
