“This is not a love song for some of us, but for all of us.”

If you tuned in to the 56th Annual Grammy Awards on January 26th, I think you’d agree that an overpowering feeling of love was radiating through the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles and in the millions of homes watching around the world. A top-notch list consisting of Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, P!nk, Lorde, and more were all advertised for performances, but Macklemore & Ryan Lewis definitely took home the award – among multiple others – for Performance of the Night.

Leading up to the Grammys, information was leaked stating that the Grammys would be host to 33 couples getting married, but I don’t think anyone completely believed the hype until the actual performance.

On a stage which resembled that of a church sanctuary, Macklemore took to the stage with producer Ryan Lewis, as well as Mary Lambert to perform the super smash hit “Same Love”.  Check out the performance below!

The message of Same Love is one that has been talked about openly for years. LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Transgender) rights have been the focal point of much controversy around the world, and I’d go to say that Macklemore & Ryan Lewis having the guts to release such a song about the right to equality is why millions respect them as artists and as people. As you can see above, as Macklemore went into the third verse of Same Love, the attending crowd burst into a thunderous applause as 33 couples (both gay and straight) took down the aisle to their wedding. The applause itself sent chills down your spine and probably sent tears from your eyes as well. Then, Queen Latifah overtook the stage and commenced the officiation of the joint-marriage ceremony of the near 3 dozen couples who chose the 56th annual Grammy Awards as their date. Not one soul in the STAPLES Center was sitting, and I can guarantee there were few sitting at home. Tears of happiness were flowing, vows and rings were exchanged, and the marriages of 33 couples were made official!

Madonna (acting as Maid of Honor) then shocked the world as she took to the stage to perform “Open Your Heart” alongside Mary Lambert as the newlyweds made their way down the aisle to make their leave.

Keith Urban was shown in tears, and Katy Perry was also shown holding one of the wedding bouquets of the brides. (You know what that means John Mayer! 😉

Each of those couples can also say that Beyoncé attended their wedding! That in and of itself makes them winners. But it’s the fact that couples of all sexualities came together for one joint marriage ceremony that cemented “Same Love” as one of the greatest Grammy performances of all time.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis took home the awards for Best New Artist, Best Rap Performance, Best Rap Album, and Best Rap Song last night! And with a monumental performance such as that of “Same Love” at the Grammys, it is safe to say that Macklemore & Ryan Lewis will definitely be one of the greatest performing duos of all time. Congratulations to Macklemore & Ryan Lewis for winning multiple, much deserved awards, and an even bigger congratulations to all of last night’s newlyweds!
