Taking the stage Sunday night for a show-stopping medley were the renowned Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, and Merle Haggard, joined by reigning country king Blake Shelton.

The medley began by bringing back to the life Kristofferson’s and Nelson’s old group The Highwaymen (which also featured the late Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings) with a clip of “Highwayman”, their iconic hit.  Next up came “Okie from Muskogee”, the smash single delivered to the country genre by Haggard in 1969. Finishing off the melody was the legendary hit “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys”, which got the crowd on its feet and swaying to the rhythm.

The melody flowed flawlessly between songs, demonstrating the crooning talents of all four stars and providing the crowd with an entertaining throwback of a performance. The entirety of the melody was delivered to the delight of the audience amidst a simple video-screen backdrop which featured images of rural landscapes – quite fitting, given the themes of the songs. It was an impressive performance from Nelson, Kristofferson, and Haggard, and gave Shelton a rare chance to collaborate with some of country’s breathing legends whilst simultaneously demonstrating his own undeniable talents.
