In The Spotlight: Timeflies

December 11, 2013

Not only are we going to put Timeflies in the spotlight this week, we’re going to put the “Electro Hip Pop Dub-Something” duo under the microscope as well. These guys have taken the music industry by storm this year, and with 2013 coming to an end, I figured it’s only right to reflect back on just how quickly time does fly.

Just find me back at the beginning…

In October of 2010, singer Cal Shapiro teamed up with fellow band-mate and drummer of The Ride, Rob “Rez” Resnick, to form the duo Timeflies. After discovering Cal’s smooth vocals/freestyling skills and Rez’s ability to produce “fat beats,” the two began releasing singles via YouTube and iTunes.

Come 2011, after the release of a couple more singles, the guys were ready to release their debut album, The Scotch Tape. It takes only one view of a Timeflies video, or visit to their website to learn of Cal’s love of scotch, hence the title of the album. The Scotch Tape shot up the iTunes charts, peaking at #2 on the Pop charts, and #8 overall in the first 24 hours of it’s release. 2011 also saw the beginning of Timeflies Tuesday, a weekly video series that began as a way for Cal and Rez to keep their fans updated on their latest projects. It then developed into an array of remixes, live covers, and my personal favorite, Cal’s freestyles over Rez’s beats.

The two began performing whilst still in college, dedicating any time that wasn’t spent studying, making music for their fast-growing following. They were then catapulted into the spotlight after an experiment with a steel drum turned into a musical masterpiece. The original remix of the Disney classic, “Under the Sea” reached over 2.7 million views, encouraging the two to return to the track a year later, and release an updated version.

Appealing to fans of a vast variety, thanks to their ability to so flawlessly produce hip-hop, pop, electro and acoustic tracks, 2012 was the year of exploration for Timeflies.

Not only were they exploring the country on tour, but experimenting with their music while doing so. They worked tirelessly to provide a new Timeflies Tuesday each week, even recording an episode to Gym Class Heroes’ “Ass Back Home” in a makeshift studio on their tour bus. However, in June the pair decided to take a break from Timeflies Tuesday to focus on an exciting new project, a mixtape and an EP! They couldn’t completely deprive their fans so they posted a letter on their website with details, explaining that they “haven’t forgotten about Tuesday.. so fans should stay tuned for a little something each week.”

As much as we all missed Timeflies Tuesday, less than a month later we were all pleasantly surprised when the July 17th Timeflies Tuesday episode was the release of their mixtape, Under The Influence. The 6-track mixtape features original mixes of popular songs such as, The Wanted’s “Glad You Came”, Rihanna’s “We Found Love”, and Adele’s “Someone Like You”. This is one of very few times, I will wholeheartedly encourage each and every one of you to be under the influence.

The following month Timeflies announced The One Night Tour, that would begin in September and travel to 35 cities around the U.S. Keep in mind, these two were still working on their One Night EP, about to start a new series on their YouTube channel, AND creating an iPhone App. Sleep Forever? Yeah right! Judging from the constant projects these guys are working on, I think they sleep NEVER!

Check out the Clockumentary series below to get a better look inside the lives of these “musical masterminds.”

In the first 24 hours of it’s November 27th (Tuesday) release, the One Night EP reached #2 on the iTunes charts. One Night includes some personal favorites of mine, including the title track, “One Night”, fan favorite “Swoon”, and even a rendition of Flo Rida’s “Wild Ones”. The 6-track EP is yet another indication that specifying a genre is not a priority for the self-proclaimed “electro hip pop dub something” pair… but making good music is.

Now onto what I would name their most successful year yet: 2013. In February, Timeflies announced the creation of their own label, Forty8Fifty, that later went on to partner with Island Def Jam Music Group. Back in August, when asked if he wanted to sign to a label Rez responded, “only if they give me a billion dollars, ask for nothing, and let me use everything I want but not anything I don’t want. Watch it happen, I’ll see you in the next documentary when I’m signed with my perfect deal.” While I can’t confirm the billion dollars, it appears as though Rez is perfectly happy with the partnership.

This new partnership brought a new single, a new EP, and a new tour, so Rez isn’t the only happy one. Released on iTunes on April 1st, Timeflies “debut” single “I Choose U” gave them the recognition they so rightfully deserved. The single took over radio waves, playing on a multitude of stations and earning them performances at the MTV Artist To Watch Showcase, the mtvU Woodie Awards, Skate and Surf Festival, Lollapolooza and more! “I Choose U” was the lead single from the duo’s recently released EP, The Warning Signs. Made up of 4 original songs, “I Choose U”, “Ride”, “SMFWU”, and “I Believe”, The Warning Signs EP was released just days after their new tour began. The Warning Signs Tour hit over 25 cities around the US with specials guests such as Chiddy Bang, Sammy Adams and Cash Cash.

They even traveled overseas to open a couple shows for pop princess, Selena Gomez during her Stars Dance tour! Now you’re probably wondering, do these guys every stop touring?? It seems as though they’re constantly on tour, because they do in fact perform quite often. But after seeing them perform at my school for Montclair State University’s 2013 Homecoming, it was evident that these guys like to party just as much as we do, probably even more. To them that’s what each and every show is – a chance to get up on stage and party with a new crowd, in a new city, every night. Who would want to stop? And although they just recently wrapped up The Warning Signs Tour, you never know when they’ll show up in your city, so keep a look out, cause I assure you, it’s a performance you won’t want to miss!

Just in case you need any more convincing, I’ll leave you with this… I’ve been a fan of Cal and Rez for over 3 years now, and I can attest that they get better and better with the release of each new song. Which, to be honest, I didn’t think was possible. So for any of you that didn’t listen to us the first time we told you to check them out, maybe now you will. Billboard may have named them one of the artists to watch in 2013, but we’re naming them THE artist to watch in 2014. Oh and ladies, they’re just as fun to look at as they are to listen to!

To those of you who are unlike me and don’t already have all of their music in your iTunes library, check out the playlist below, and then head over to iTunes, where you can buy their album and EPs. If you end up loving them as much as I think you will, be sure to like them on Facebook, and follow them on Twitter: @timeflies @whatupcal @robresnick to stay up to date with their latest projects, which just so happens to be their full-length album due for release next year 😉
