Ashley Honnell

Ashley Honnell, an up and coming pop-country artist sat down with me via Skype for a one-on-one interview this past evening! Not only was this blonde bombshell super nice, but she gave me the inside scoop on some of her favorite artists, her favorite stores to shop at, a tid bit of exciting news about her next single, “Flowers” and much more.

Ashley is a 19 year-old singer from Idaho. She grew up having the urge to sing in any way and anywhere possible. At the age of 8, little Ashley expressed to her parents that when she grew up she wanted to be a singer and they always said “no, no what do you ACTUALLY want to be?” and she would always answer with, “I want to be a singer!”… Well what do ya know, here she is and there is no stopping her!

Take a look below at the questions I asked and Ashley’s in-depth and very honest answers:

1. I know you started singing when you were young, but what was it that sparked your interest and what made you want to pursue music as a career?

Ashley responded by saying, “My mom used to sing to me when I was a baby and growing up I was always surrounded by music”. She then proceeds to explain that she was a Jehovah’s Witness, which made her unable to pursue big dreams. Now that she doesn’t practice that religion anymore, she felt free and was able to do exactly what she wanted and follow her dreams!

2. What is it about country music that you love and why did you choose this genre?

Ashley explained that she remembers her Mom playing Tim McGraw and Reba when they would go on drives in the family mini van. She said that “country has always been her background and a part of her roots but she loved the idea of pop being apart of it.”

3. I know that “I Just Want You To Know” and “Flowers” are your first 2 singles, which one is your favorite and why?

Ashley expresses, “I love “I Justin Wanted You To Know”, don’t get me wrong, but I wanted it to be a build up to “Flowers”, because “Flowers” is just kind of in your face and has more of a pop vibe. So, I’d say “Flowers” would be my favorite and there’s more going on in it and the video is going to showcase that.” I then proceeded to ask her if she looks up to Taylor Swift a bit being that she has a pop vibe to her country music and she said, “Yeah, and I like that she can connect with an audience, she knows who she is and I think it’s really cool that she can do that.”

4.What is it that you saw in Keith Olson and what is he like to work with?

“He, as you know, has worked with some of the legends and they’ve all had a really cool sound and I thought if I’m going to do country-pop, he’s the perfect producer because he was pop and still is pop! Everything just meshed well with him and working with him was a complete blast.” She explained that Keith is super fun and silly but when things needed to be serious they were.

5. I know you have performed at a few places so far, which one was your favorite and why?

“Well I did the Scotty McCreery one which was super cool, but I would have to say the Spokane Fair in Washington. There were tons of people, it was ridiculous and they were right in my face and trying to touch my hand. It was just a little taste of what’s to come and was a perfect chance to get my feet wet and I really enjoyed myself!”

6. Your fan base seems to be very dedicated, what do you love most about your “Honny’s”?

“How loyal they are! They want to push for me, get me out there, want everyone to know about me and they are just so supportive. I can’t explain how much I appreciate it.”

7. When you recorded your first single with Keith, how did you feel after? Was it surreal and exciting, or were you nervous about people liking it?

“Yeah, I was excited, it’s your first time recording a single, I definitely was excited… you know when you’re in there singing you’re thinking “Am I actually doing this?” and it was the coolest thing ever. I was nervous about what people would think, especially with the music video. You just don’t know, you might like it but another might not. You can’t care about what other people think and you just have to do you!”

8. In 10 years where would you like to be in your career and what do you aspire to achieve?

Ashley said, “10 years from now I would like to be signed to a record label and I want to tour, I want to show people what I have and connect with fans all over. They’re friends and my fans and I think that touring would definitely be something that I’d like to be doing as well as living in Nashville.”

9. I heard that you look up to Reba a lot, are there any other artists you would love to do a duet with?

“For girls, I would love to do a duet with Carrie Underwood, she’s up there, she’s my girl and Taylor would be cool because of her experiences and how she connects with an audience. As for Carrie, she has an amazing voice and she’s oober talented. Keith Urban would also be amazing!”

10. If you could choose one male country artist to tour with, who would it be and why?

With excitement in her tone, she replies, “I would want to tour with Keith Urban, or Eric Church! … I think. Keith Urban! Just go with Keith Urban!”

11. I know you opened for Scotty McCreery this past Monday. How surreal was it and how did you feel on stage in front of such a large audience?

Ashley expresses, “It was super cool, I can’t explain the feeling, but when people are in your face and totally into what your singing about, it’s a crazy feeling and so surreal. It was just an honor to open for Scotty! He’s such a sweet guy and he’s got a lot going for him, especially with that voice, man!”

12. I could tell you have great fashion sense. What kind of clothes are you in to and what are your favorite stores?

“Oooh, I’m really into H&M but it depends on the mood. Forever 21 is my store, I like shopping at places that are cheap where you can get super cute stuff, it’s the way to go! I have a ton of rings from Forever 21! It just depends on the day.”

After the interview we proceeded to take a “selfie” on Skype so we could document the interview, which was definitely a must considering we had a blast together!
