EXO Are The K-Pop Dozen On The Rise

November 4, 2013

South Korean-Chinese boy-band EXO have surely not quite got enough members in their group have they? At 12 members strong (yes, that’s right, TWELVE) the group have been riding high in the summer K-Pop 100 charts, with their single ‘Wolf’ gathering the initial interest, swiftly followed by their latest single ‘Growl’ peaking at #3 and remaining in the top 10 for 8 weeks!

Now the group are one of the 10 finalists for the MTV European Music Award for the ‘Worldwide Act’. Representing Korea, the boys will go up against Justin Bieber (Canada), One Direction (UK and Ireland), Lena (Germany) and Cody Simpson (Australia) to name a few. If they win the award, they would become only the 2nd ever Korean act to win the EMA. In 2011 BIGBANG won the title for Korea. The award is completely fan voted so their fans have their work cut-out going up against the Beliebers and the Directioners.

Comprising the following members: Kris, Suho, Xiumin, Lu Han, Lay, Baekhyun, Chen, Chanyeo, l D.O, Tao, Kai and Sehun, EXO are sub-divided into two groups, EXO-K and EXO-M, performing their music in Korean and Mandarin, respectively. They made their début back in April 2012 with the release of the single “Mama”.

The group’s two albums, the 2012 début EP “Mama” and the 2013 studio album “XOXO” were both major commercial successes, selling over a million worldwide. Following this fantastic start for the group, they found themselves winning trophies from all three of Korea’s major free-to-air radio stations, as well as numerous ‘newcomer’ awards and over 10 further awards since their début in 2012.

Last month saw sales of “XOXO” reach in excess of 910,000 copies which makes the group the best-selling K-Pop artist to break the 700,000 mark since 2001 and their enormous rise in popularity is refelcted in the news they will have their own relaity TV show which will air later this month on the cable channel MBC Every 1.
