Alanis Morissette’s “Jagged Little Pill” Is Broadway-Bound

November 15, 2013

The 1995 landmark album Jagged Little Pill holds a special place in the hearts of every 90s kid with an angst-y mom…or at least, that’s the case for me personally. So when we heard that the 18-year-old LP was being adapted for a Broadway musical, we were pretty hype.

The album artwork alone brings about nostalgia!

The Broadway musical will include all 16 tracks from the album (thank God), some others from the Morissette songbook, as well as new originals that Alanis will compose for the show. Vivek J. Tiwary and Arvind Ethan David are both producers for the musical, which will be unveiled as a workshop in 2014. For the duties of orchestration and arrangements, Alanis is collaborating with Tony and Pulitzer winner Tom Kitt, who worked on the musical for Green Day’s American Idiot.

Jagged Little Pill is widely known for its unbridled lyrics that depict a woman’s rage, confusion and anguish, evidently caused by broken relationships. I distinctly remember listening to JLP on CD while on car rides with my mom. While listening to her sing along with Alanis’ bitter-but-honest anthems, it became very clear to me then that my mother identified with the lyrical content as well as the overall mood of the album. No doubt, it is an extremely personal compilation that struck a chord with millions of listeners. As a sidenote, JLP casually showcased Alanis’ impressive range, vocal dynamism and originality. The album earned nine Grammy nominations between 1996 and 1999, winning five out of nine (including Album of the Year in 1996).

“I look forward to taking the heart of Jagged Little Pill and expanding its story, fleshing it out into ever deeper layers of emotionality, specificity, humanity, power, physicality, spirit and fabulism,” Alanis confirmed during a press release.

Since the project is still in the beginning stages, and there haven’t been any announcements regarding the cast, there isn’t much more to relay. One thing’s for sure: we can’t wait to see if the Broadway version can effectively embody the magnitude of Jagged Little Pill.  If you’re as excited as we are, watch the video for “You Oughta Know,” and ready your bitter hearts.
