With the release of her newest album “Prism” earlier this week, there is no doubt that Katy Perry is definitely on top of her game and is the female artist to beat. The Santa Barbara, California native is sitting comfortably atop any other female artists at the moment and rightfully so.

Even if you’re not a fan of Katy Perry, you cannot deny that her last album “Teenage Dream” completely slayed the international music charts. As the title of this article states, Perry is in the spotlight. As a matter of fact, “Teenage Dream” garnished Perry the Spotlight Award at the 2012 Billboard Music Awards. Many tracks that were released from “Teenage Dream” went straight to number one: California Girls, Teenage Dream, Firework, The One That Got Away, and Last Friday Night, to name a few.

However, when “Teenage Dream” shot out its last number one hit, Katy seemingly fell off the face of the Earth. What we didn’t know was the Katy was meticulously shedding her California Girl image and transitioning into the roaring champion that she is now.

Katy Perry became a household name thanks to her candy-coated California Girls music video.

But starting back in August, there were strange videos being posted on Katy’s VEVO page, teasing a “third-coming” in the coming weeks.

These videos ranged from the Katy burning her infamous, blue California Girls wig, to the funeral of that persona altogether, showing a smirking Katy Perry when the camera panned to her face.

Then, on August 12th, the teasing culminated to the release of “Roar”, the first single from Perry’s new album “Prism”, which would be released some two and a half months later.

“Roar” instantly shot Katy back to the top of the charts. The emoji-filled lyric video, which was very innovative and original, solidified her return to the music business. It was as if she never took a hiatus in the first place! The single was released, shooting to the number one spot on iTunes, but Katy’s teasing was not over just yet. Perry then began teasing the music video for “Roar”, showing her swinging through the jungle on a vine, reminiscent of the Disney film Tarzan. On September 5th, the music video for Roar was released, and Katy had her first number one hit from “Prism” with “Roar” sitting atop the Billboard chart (graciously knocking Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” from the number one spot. Praise Jesus!).

Some seven weeks later, “Roar” is STILL in the top ten (Number 3 actually) on the Billboard Hot 100!

In the weeks following the release of “Roar”, Katy performed the hit song at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, and released some new tracks from “Prism”. Thanks to her friends at Pepsi, the Katycats had the opportunity to vote on which of two songs that they would like released following “Roar”. “Dark Horse” and “Walking On Air” were the contending tracks, with “Dark Horse” receiving 64% of the vote.

“Walking On Air” was finally released for purchase via iTunes, doing really well following its predecessors.

And finally, FINALLY, earlier this week (22 Oct), the endless teasing had subsided and “Prism” was released in its entirety. It only took mere moments for “Prism” to shoot to number one on iTunes (it’s still number one as we speak). With Fifth Harmony, Lorde, and One Direction’s impeding album controlling the charts, “Prism” slayed all of them and is now sitting comfortably at number one. Bangerz who?

Without a doubt, Katy is simultaneously the Queen of the Jungle and the Queen of Music at the moment. If you haven’t had the chance to pick up “Prism” yet, WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?! Go on iTunes, walk to Walmart, jog to Target, and pick this album up! It is arguably the most anticipated album of 2013 and it doesn’t disappoint. And if you’re not already following her on Twitter, make sure to follow Perry at @KatyPerry! She’s giving Justin Bieber a run for his money to be the most followed person, trailing only by just over 300,000 followers!

Katy Perry has definitely earned in spot In The Spotlight, and we might see the 2014 Grammy Awards in her future!
