One To Watch: JETTA

Meet the devastatingly talented UK artist: JETTA

Born and raised as an only child in Liverpool, Jetta (@jettafficial ) was surrounded by music from a very early age. With an a cappella singer for a mother and a sound engineer for a father, it’s no surprise the gorgeous 23-year-old has followed suit and made her passion for music her profession.

After moving to London three years ago, her originality and flair caught the eye of Paloma Faith who asked her to become a backing singer. She later went on to work with Cee Lo Green. Then, just last year, Jetta teamed up with DJ and dubstep artist, Jakwob for the track Electrify. The track received a good deal of support from BBC Radio One‘s MistaJam, Nihal and Zane Lowe who made it his ‘Hottest Record In The World Right Now‘.

But the defining moment of this singer/song writer’s story so far has to be the release of her début single Start a Riot  last year, which met with critical acclaim from the likes of NME  who described the track as a “super-confident début single from Liverpool singer-songwriter Jetta. It’s a little bit The xx, a little bit Florence and a little bit heavy metal. And if that doesn’t intrigue you, we don’t know what will.”  The track, written by Jetta  (together with James Eliot who also produced Ellie Goulding’s Halcyon) was issued as a free download and introduced us to her raw, edgy and courageous style.  The underground success of the song lead to the singer being signed to Jason Flom’s Lava/Republic Records by Harinder Rana who earlier signed Jessie J.

Her voice almost mirrors that of one of her inspirations; Annie Lennox, and yet it stands alone as uniquely hypnotic, capturing the spirit of her lyrics superbly. Hers is a strong voice that holds it’s own against the power of the track. And the world is taking notice, the song was snapped up for the The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones soundtrack, a move which is about to expose the US to this incredible artist.

On the strength of this début, it is no exaggeration to say that Jetta would be upping the game here in the UK with the release of an album which she says is in the works. Promisingly, on 28th August she tweeted: “Less than 24 hours ’til I hit the studio to FINISH THIS RECORD! Hallelujah” so perhaps the wait is nearly over.

Jetta has found her mojo and it’s emotional, soulful, powerful song-writing in a class of it’s own coupled with outstanding vocals.  There is no doubt in my mind that this is an artist on the rise.
