Songs Of Summer 2013!

July 17, 2013

You know that feeling of elation when you turn on the radio and your favorite song has just started playing? Isn’t that quite possibly the best feeling ever?

There is no better way to spend your summer cruising down the highway or relaxing out by the pool than with your favorite summer tunes blasting in the background. It just isn’t complete. Each year, songs win listeners over with their upbeat tune or chill vibes. Last year, “Call Me Maybe” had the honors of taking the summer radios by storm. I personally chose the top five summer songs, based on how often I hear them on the radio and the popularity of each. (They are not in any specific order.)

“Get Lucky” by Daft Punk ft. Pharrell Williams

  • How many times have you turned on the radio and heard the funky, disco tune of this song? I’ll guess a lot. However, that is not automatically a bad thing. This song is extremely catchy, the disco vibe making you just want to get up and dance. The lyrics also easily get stuck in your head, so your stuck all day singing, “We’re up all night to the sun/ We’re up all night to get some/ We’re up all night for good fun/ We’re up all night to get lucky!”

“We Can’t Stop” by Miley Cyrus

  • This song can probably describe that one crazy summer night where you may or may not even have remembered what happened. It’s definitely not as funky as “Get Lucky”, but you could still jam to the R&B and dance feel of it. “We Can’t Stop” is really simple (and tempting) to follow along to, and as Idolator’s Sam Lansky said, “It doesn’t sound like anything else on the radio!”

“I Love It” by Icona Pop ft. Charli XCX

  • If any song can get you hyped up for the night, it would most definitely be this electro pop hit. Heather Phares from AllMusic described it as “half-sung, half-shouted vocals and revved-up synths make the song inescapably catchy.” The simplicity of the chorus makes you want to shout it all day long and you just get so amped up!

“Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke ft. T.I. and Pharrell Williams

  • Despite the controversy surrounding this song, it became extremely popular to the public.’s Bill Lamb deemed it “the catchiest and sexiest pop dance hits of the year.” Yes many female fans may have felt insulted by this song, but Robin Thicke did deliver a risqué performance with vocals. The music video, aside from everything, depicts just have fun this song can be.

“Treasure” by Bruno Mars

  • As always, Bruno Mars delivers a stellar hit. And again, it’s a song to make the ladies swoon all over. This song follows along the lines of “Get Lucky” with it’s funky, disco beat, but instead, Mars is singing about how a certain lady is his treasure. Paste Magazine’s Ryan Reed states “Treasure” is stripper-theme funk-pop with gooey synth pads and enormous slap bass fills that punch through like air humps. The descriptive imagery of the review shows you exactly why this is a song of the summer.
