Thank You Justin Bieber For #MakingAChange

July 12, 2013

I just want to take a moment to say thank you to Justin for everything he has done and continues to do for others.  Yes, he’s devoted to his fans, but I want to talk predominantly about his charity work (and you may as well make a large cup of tea because this could take a while – he does THAT much!).  This won’t come as a surprise to the fans, but to those who don’t know his background I should explain that Bieber came from a very humble upbringing and remains grateful for everything he now has.  Don’t be fooled by the media tendency to paint him as a wild rogue who fritters away his hard-earned cash.  Yes, he has a nice garage of supercars (but so does Radio 2 presenter Chris Evans and we don’t berate him now do we?).  He must be allowed to reward himself.  But the following list of charities he has helped over the years (which is by no means exhaustive) is what sets Justin apart from the rest.  He doesn’t have to help, he does it because he wants to give back.  Here are just a handful of examples of his compassion:

Musicians On Call – A charity originally included as part of the Believe Charity Drive (where Beliebers could help by doing their own fundraising for selected charities). Justin has donated ‘VIP Experiences’ for all cities his Believe Tour hits this summer where Musicians On Call has Bedside Performance Programs.

Pencils of Promise – Donates $1 of every tour ticket sold (both from his previous My World Tour and his current Believe World Tour) to the charity which builds schools (and that’s a lot of dollars!).  Incidentally, a week after Hurricane Sandy hit the east coast of the US he donated $1 from every ticket sold over 4 shows to the relief fund for that too.

Make A Wish – Justin holds the record for the musician who has granted the most wishes.   He visits a sick child in hospital before every show and devotes much of his free time to visiting children that are battling life-threatening medical conditions.  In 2010, the singer featured four Make-A-Wish children in his music video for Pray, and in 2011 he received the Make-A-Wish Foundation Celebrity Award for outstanding dedication to wish granting.

Whitney elementary – Watch the video, it’s just lovely. The singer donated $100,00 to this school for underprivileged children in Las Vegas back in December 2011, performed and donated a truck load of toys which he spent the afternoon handing out.   The head teacher’s response to his gesture says it all:

In May this year Justin returned to the school while he was in town for the 2013 Billboard Music Awards (yes, you remember, the one he was booed at simply for winning an award??!!) and handed out food donations totaling $150,000 and pledged to fill the school’s pantry for one year. “My mom and I went to food banks, so being able to help now is amazing,” he said.

Japanese tsunami – Justin was scheduled to perform in the Tsunami hit area of Japan (and was adamant they would go ahead, but label bosses wouldn’t allow it so he performed nearby and insisted on meeting the local children who had survived the disaster). He donated a portion of his concert ticket sales to the Japanese Red Cross

Avalanna Routh and the Cure ATRT Foundation – On Valentine’s Day, 2011, Justin surprised six-year-old fan and brain cancer sufferer Avalanna Routh by flying her to New York, where he spent the afternoon playing board games and eating cupcakes with her.  They got ‘married’ and the little girl was nicknamed Mrs. Bieber. The pair re-united several times with Justin making her his One Less Lonely Girl on one occasion (see the lovely video below). The gorgeous six-year-old had been battling the deadly from of brain cancer known as ATRT since she was a baby and sadly lost the fight in September 2012.  Justin and the entire Belieber fanbase were heartbroken and continue to support the Cure ATRT foundation to this day.

Other charities Justin has contributed to:

Alzheimer’s Association
Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals
City of Hope
Cure Duchenne
Food Bank For New York City
Give Back Hollywood Foundation
GRAMMY Foundation
It Gets Better Project
Water Aid
Usher’s New Look Foundation

(A portion of the revenue from sales of his Christmas album were also donated to charity)

The list is endless really because Justin is always looking for new ways to help others.   He makes me want to be a better person, to give back wherever I can.  It’s a shame more media outlets don’t focus on his positivity, because there is no question that this musician has a heart of pure gold.  But today all I ask is that you take a moment to say thank you to Justin for #MakingAChange .  MJ would have been proud fella.
