J. Cole embraces his “Crooked Smile”

June 6, 2013

This week J. Cole released his newest single “Crooked Smile” which features TLC. The track is from his upcoming album Born Sinner which is set to release June 18th.

In an interview with Fuse, J. Cole opened up explaining that the song is essentially about embracing and empowering.

“It’s ‘Keep Ya Head Up’ empowering. . . It’s embracing. It’s me saying that ‘I don’t care about this.’ I understand I don’t have the Colgate. I don’t have the braces. I understand, and they definitely remind you. When you become somewhat known, they definitely make it a point to remind you about your flaws. . . Things I hadn’t worried about since I was like 17, I’m now worrying about again. So, that’s me empowering, taking ownership of it. Like ‘Yeah I know. So what? And I’m still doing this. And I’m still doing that.’ And flipping it to tell other people to embrace they flaws too and not be so caught up in the little things. Your weight, or your nose, or your eyebrows, or your smile, or your hair. You know what I mean? And it’s like giving people power to embrace they own flaws, in a nutshell. And TLC is on it, so it’s like how incredible is that?”

J. Cole starts off the track celebrating his own imperfections, rapping,

“They tell me I should fix my grill cause I got money now / I ain’t gon’ sit around and front like I ain’t thought about it / A perfect smile is more appealing but it’s funny how / My sh– is crooked look at how far I done got without it / I keep my twisted grill, just to show them kids it’s real / We ain’t picture perfect but we worth the picture still.”

He then continues on to offer advice to woman saying,

“Love yourself, girl, or nobody will / Oh, you a woman? I don’t know how you deal / With all the pressure to look impressive and go out in heels / I feel for you / Killing yourself to find a man that’ll kill for you / You wake up, put makeup on / Stare in the mirror but it’s clear that you can’t face what’s wrong / No need to fix what God already put his paint brush on.”

To furthermore get everyone hyped, J. Cole will kick off his Dollar & a Dream tour June 11th to promote the upcoming album. The tickets will cost just $1 to attend but will not go on sale until the day of the show.

Born Sinner is one of the most anticipated albums releases of this summer and will be going up against Kanye West’s album which is set to drop on the same day as well. So far, J. Cole’s album seems to be on the right track given the singles he has already provided. Listen to “Crooked Smile” below and decide what you think about the TLC-assisted track.
