Weknowthedj Easter Weekend Box Office Breakdown

April 3, 2013

Unfortunately, the continuous rain showers that accompany April each year aren’t just a prolonged April Fool’s Day joke. Although the famous saying is, “April showers bring May flowers,” once the days of rain reach double digits, I’m sure almost everyone is willing to skip the blooming flowers. Thankfully, most April days aren’t complete washouts so you’ll probably only need to entertain yourself for a few hours while you wait for the storm clouds to pass. By this point, you’re probably wondering why we’re talking about the weather on an entertainment website, right? Well, we’ve come up with the perfect solution to making the storm end a bit quicker. What better way to spend a rainy day than in a movie theater watching some of 2013’s top blockbusters? Holiday weekends are often a huge success for the movie industry and since Easter weekend has just ended, it’s time for a Weknowthedj Movie Box Office Breakdown.

At the top of the box office this week was G.I. Joe: Retaliation, directed by Jon M. Chu, who you might know as the director of Justin Bieber’s Never Say Never. The war movie raked in $41.2 million this past weekend, which is quite impressive for an opening weekend! The flick features Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who’s muscles are big enough to scare me just by looking at him; Channing Tatum is also in the film, and I’m almost positive every girl will agree with me that watching Channing Tatum in combat gear is a guaranteed good time! In G.I Joe: Retaliation, the G.I. Joes are fighting against Cobra, their mortal enemy, and contending existence-jeopardizing threats from the government.

Taking second place in the box office with $26.5 million over Easter weekend is the animated film, The Croods, directed by Kirk DeMicco and Chris Sanders. Emma Stone, Nicholas Cage, and Ryan Reynolds lend their voices for the film, which follows the world’s first family as they travel on a journey of a lifetime once their cave is destroyed. The film portrays the Croods discovering a new world that is filled with incredible creatures. Their world isn’t the only thing changed though; their outlook on life also completely changes. The animated flick, from DreamWorks will push viewers to change their perspective on life; the motivational aspect of this film definitely makes it perfect for a dreary day when your mood matches the gray of the clouds in the sky.

The Top Three in this weekend’s box office wouldn’t be complete without Tyler Perry’s Temptation, written and directed by Tyler Perry. Funny-man Tyler Perry has put away his Madea suit for the time being to portray a more serious character; Temptation is about a married woman’s, played by Jurnee Smollett-Bell, temptation by a billionaire, which leads to recklessness and betrayal and ends up changing the woman’s life forever. Lance Gross, Kim Kardashian, and Vanessa Williams join Jurnee Smollett-Bell in the film, which brought in $22.3 million this past weekend.

Following behind Tyler Perry’s Temptation was Olympus Has Fallen, directed by Antoine Fuqua. The White House based film features Gerard Butler, Dylan McDermott, Morgan Freeman and Melissa Leo, and brought in $14 million on Easter weekend. In the film, terrorists capture the White House, coded “Olympus” by the Secret Service, and the President is kidnapped. A former Presidential guard, played by Gerard Butler, is trapped inside the building and his inside knowledge is required to help save the President, retake the White House and prevent an even bigger disaster!

Rounding out the top five, we’re introduced to the backstory of the Wizard of Oz in Oz The Great and Powerful. We all know the story of Dorothy and all her friends, but in Oz The Great and Powerful, we’re given the inside scoop on just who the Wizard of Oz really is. The film, directed by Sam Raimi, brought in $11.6 million this weekend and features James Franco, Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams, and Zach Braff. James Franco, who is also in Spring Breakers, plays Oscar Diggs who was a magician hurled away from Kansas to the Land of Oz. Once Diggs meets the three witches Theodora, Evanora, and Glinda, he is forced to find out who is good and who’s evil because it’s too late. Oscar transforms himself into the powerful Wizard of Oz but more importantly, he transforms himself into a better man.

Maybe you’ve already seen one of these films, or if your “April Showers” came a little early this year, maybe you’ve seen all five! Each film definitely looks like it deserves a trip to the movie theater, and maybe soon you’ll be wishing for more rainy days to go see all the movies playing. Tweet us at @weknowthedj and let us know what you think of any of these five flicks! Hopefully the spring weather is headed to you soon, but until then, happy movie watching!
