Tyler The Creator, ‘Wolf’

April 7, 2013

With releasing his third studio album, Tyler, The Creator proves that he is yet unchanged from releasing very complex, strange, yet clever pieces of music.

The songs on Wolf vary widely from each other. In “Answer”, Tyler is clearly lashing out at his absentee father, stating, “Hey dad its me/ Oh I’m Tyler, I think I be your son/ Sorry I called you the wrong name, see, my brain’s splitting/ Dad isn’t your name, see F****t’s a little more fitting.” Listening to this song, you get a sense of how angry Tyler is feeling, but then again, it seems as if he’s always angry.

In “IFHY”, yet again Tyler appears angry, but this time at an old love. Actually, I think it’s more of an “I hate that I love you” type of feeling. Based off of the lyrics, Tyler is head over heels for this love (later known as Salem), saying, “Actually, if you even consider leaving, I’ll lose a couple of screws in due time, I’ll stop breathing, and you’ll see the meaning of stalking.” Hm…creepily cute or just plain creepy?

In general, many of the songs are emotionally wild. You may think the song will be a sweet, smoothing tune, as in the intro of “Wolf”, but it really wouldn’t be Tyler-like to leave out a classic f-word.

Critiques were generally positive about the album, like David Amidon of Pop Matters voicing, “…I can probably say about it is that nothing has actually changed about Tyler himself. All his flaws as a coherent lyricist and person are on full display throughout the album…”

The 18-track album is now available on iTunes, and Tyler has even extended his tour promoting the album from April 30th to May 18th.
