Paid Dues Festival Unites Diverse Hip Hoppers

April 4, 2013

The 8th annual Paid Dues Festival kicked off last Saturday at the San Manuel Amphitheater in San Bernardino, California. The Hip Hop artists performing brought thousands of fans to the venue to watch the 12 hour show, which was made up of more than 40 artists and three stages. The festival ranged in artists from Kendrick Lamar to Juicy J and Chevy Woods, a very diverse festival of fame. Songs ranged from older hip hop style to newer rap.

My favorite performance was given by Macklemore and his dj Ryan Lewis; Wanz even made an online casino appearance for the festival. While this was not his first year performing at the festival, Macklemore”s fanbase has become much larger due to the rising popularity of “Thrift Shop” and “Can”t Hold Us” … crazy success for someone who is still not signed to a major record label. Keep in mind that none of the performers here were, it is an independent hip hop festival. Before starting his “Thrift Shop” performance, Macklemore talked to the crowd about how he wrote the song to inspire people to stay original and not go out and buy exactly what everyone else has, he encourages everyone to be themselves, saving money in the process. For the number of artists, the tickets for the show were very affordable and $1 from each sold was donated to charity. Check out Macklemore”s performace below!
