Coachella 2013 Weekend One Recap!

April 15, 2013

Every year thousands of music lovers make the pilgrimage to the Empire Polo Grounds for Coachella Music Festival. Even though the site of the festival is 2 hours outside of LA, it has the atmosphere of another universe. The entire festival pulses with its own heartbeat making every regular activity, extraordinary. Not only can you enjoy some of the worlds best music at Coachella, but they’ve also got a giant amusement park with rides, games and more. It’s a once in a lifetime experience and here’s a recap of Weekend One of the festival.

The festival kicked off on Friday with nearly 60 artists dazzling the stage for the thousands of attendees. Electrifying performances by Lord Huron, C2C, Dillon Fancis with a ridiculous setup on stage with inflatable cats holding signs up reading “F**k”, incredibly weird visuals and an MC with quite the crude drawing of a cat on his belly. Purity Ring came on the stage not long after. This duo has definitely changed the face of electronic music with their type of productions. They were a class of their own as they delivered a vivacious performance with unique lighting and clear vocals. Bassnector shook stage as the last performance to end night 1. Other performances of the day included Jake Bugg, James McCartney, Metric, Passion Pit, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Jurassic 5,  Tegan and Sera and dozens more.

Day 2 of Coachella succeeding in pleasing most of the festival goers. The Postal Service made a return to a mass audience as Ben Gibbard and Jenny Lewis showing their chemistry through hits like “The District Sleeps Aline Tonight” and “Such Great Heights.” The xx proved their live performance skills with a strong show (despite a reputation of being a bit snoozy in a live setting) and the icy trio sincerely told the crowd they wouldn’t rather be anywhere else as they have been looking forward to Coachella for so long. Grizzly Bear brought intensity to their set with glowing jelly fish lights that floated into the air.

The day was definitely owned by ridiculousness and chaos as 2 Chainz and Major Lazer attracted some of the most frighteningly large masses of crowds that have ever assembled at Coachella. Major Lazer put on an extravagant show as they had their tunes pulsing through the speakers and they were pumping up the audience with their many dancers, Flaming Lips-esque hamster balls and crazy antics that filled up their hour-long set.

However if there was anything to take away from Day 2 of the festival, it was Savages. There was no need to be familiar with any of their music to know that those girls are going to be big.

The weekend came to a wrap as the 3rd day kicked off performances by Mimosa, Thee Oh Sees and La Roux who delivered one of the most vibrant shows during her set. Currently on a worldwide DJ tour, Hardwell dropped into Coachella to host a performance that felt more like a party that vibrated the very ground the festival was setup on. Vampire Weekend impressed their massive crowd with a loud show while Red Hot Chili Peppers brought back some of their classic hits including “Californication” and “Can’t stop.”

And with that, weekend 1 of the annual music festival comes to an end. The bar is set quite high for weekend 2 so if you’re in the area, it’ll be worth making the trip to attend Coachella!
