5 Times Club: JT Returns to SNL

March 12, 2013

Justin Timberlake returned to New York City on March 9, 2013 to host’s NBC’s Saturday Night Live for an impressive fifth time! Timberlake’s return showcased him in various sketches, and he even performed his newest single “Suit And Tie” featuring Jay-Z.

A few highlights of JT’s SNL return included his opening monologue, which lasted nearly ten minutes! Timberlake had much to say about his returning role to the SNL stage: “There are so many exciting things about hosting five times. You get to see old friends. You get to try new things. You get to inevitably let everyone down thanks to overly high expectations—Thanks, Internet!” Justin then proceeded to leave the stage, heading towards the infamous “5 Timers Club”.  This is where special guests Steve Martin, Alec Baldwin, Tom Hanks, Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, Martin Short, and Candice Bergen all joined Timberlake to reflect on their times of hosting SNL an unprecedented 5 times.

One of the best sketches of the night was “Bring It On Down To Veganville” which starred Justin, in a Vegan mascot costume, trying to convert a neighboring sausage salesman into the life of meatless meals. Timberlake sang a medley of remixed Top 100 singles with lyric changes to fit the Vegan persona he was portraying. One song included “We Found Love In A Meatless Place”, a healthy advertisement based off of Rihanna’s “We Found Love”. After every performance in the sketch, Timberlake would finish with “Bring it on down to Veganville”, which received a thunderous applause from the audience every single time. Eventually, Timberlake, with the help of a “Babe” reference, helped the sausage salesman see the error of his ways. And with a “Tofu Burrita’s”, he covered the latest Internet craze “The Harlem Shake” in a “Vegan Shake”, which ended the skit.

Later in the show, Timberlake took the stage with his band to sing his latest hit single “Suit And Tie”. Joined by backup dancers, which reminded some of his N’SYNC days, Timberlake delivered a stellar performance donning his suit and tie. Justin surprised many when he took a shot at Kanye West when he changed the lyrics from “Sh*t- so big, got a hit and picked up a habit” to “hit so big, got rappers acting dramatic.” Jay-Z later came in to catch his solo and showed the audience all of the good things, which was an awesome performance of the latest chart-topping hit.

Justin Timberlake definitely did not disappoint with his return to the Saturday Night Live stage. A show filled with hilarious sketches, performances, and special guests definitely made the show worth tuning into! Did the show live up to your expectations? Leave a comment and tell us why or why not!
