Selena Gomez performs third annual charity concert for UNICEF

January 25, 2013

Spring Breakers starlet Selena Gomez took the stage this past Saturday night  for a sold-out show in New York City’s Best Buy Theater for UNICEF’s third annual charity concert.  The crowd welcomed her with enthusiasm and elation as the brunette beauty bounced onto the stage looking radiant in a simple white dress, her glossy fringe adorned with daisies – an ensemble which was at once sweet and refreshing to match the down-to-earth personality we’ve all come to know and love.

In a press release concerning the event, Gomez vocalized her feelings in terms of the organization for which the concert would benefit. “Nothing is more important than helping children in need around the globe. I’m thankful that I can use my voice to bring awareness and much-needed funds to UNICEF so they can continue their critical work. Together, with my fans, we can save lives.”

And indeed they can, as the show itself raised over $660,000 – an enormous sum which will undoubtedly benefit UNICEF in their efforts to provide medical services, education, nourishment, and clean water to children in need across the globe.

Joining Gomez on stage were brother duo Nat & Alex Wolff, singer/songwriter Noah Guthrie, and Disney starlet Bridgit Mendler, all of whom worked to rock the show to a brilliant start prior to Gomez’s appearance.

Gomez kept things simple at the show, backed solely by acoustic guitars, drums, and a keyboard for a splendidly intimate vibe. Connecting beautifully with the audience, the Texan beauty performed a number of her biggest hits, including “Round and Round”, “Naturally”, “Who Says”, “A Year Without Rain”, and “Hit the Lights”. In addition, she wowed the crowd with some well-chosen cover tracks – Taylor Swift’s “I Knew You Were Trouble” and The Lumineers’ “Ho Hey” among them (joined by Nat and Alex Wolff for the latter).

But perhaps the most talked-about cover of the night was Justin Timberlake’s “Cry Me a River”, a song Gomez introduced by stating, “I’ve been through a lot the last couple months. It’s been sad and cool, but interesting. The song definitely speaks to me.” Such words instantly made the crowd wonder if the song was aimed at anyone in particular – and the natural thought which came to mind was that of Justin Bieber, whom Gomez recently went through a well-publicized breakup with and who, ironically, performed the same song at his own concert in November amidst initial Jelena breakup rumors.

Gomez closed the show with a bang by performing “Love You Like A Love Song”, her smash-hit dance anthem complete with infectious tempos and catchy lyrics which undoubtedly had the audience on their feet in a fit of high energy. The cool allure she evoked whilst performing mixed with the riveting set list ensured that the show was a huge success. Though it was Gomez’s first live performance onstage in over a year, she left no doubt in anyone’s mind that she is still a large contender in the musical game – and will be for many years to come.
