40th American Music Awards Recap

November 19, 2012

The 40th American Music Awards aired on ABC tonight. With almost 20 performances by some of music’s biggest names, the show was three hours of entertainment and surprises, minus all the commercials in between. Here is what went down for those of you who missed it!

Superstar Usher opened the show, and I think its safe to say that dude has more stamina than half of America! Along with his dance moves and singing, he also ran his heart out on a treadmill for a good 30 seconds of his song.

The first award of the night went to Justin Bieber for Favorite Artist: Pop Rock male, he dedicated the award to his haters and promised everyone that he would be around for a while. Great to hear!

Modern Family’s Eric Stonestreet presented the award for Favorite Country Female Artist to Taylor Swift who looked absolutely stunning. Carly Rae Jepsen performed “This Kiss” and “Call Me Maybe” and was followed by the handsome men of The Wanted who sang their latest single, “I Found You.”

Kelly Clarkson was up next, singing a few of her greatest hits, which are featured on her album, ‘Greatest Hits: Chapter One’, which releases tomorrow. Paying homage to American Idol, Clarkson belted it out proving she’s still holds the same extraordinary talent that started her journey a decade ago.

Nicki Minaj took the award for Best Rap/Hip Hop Album, Roman Reloaded. Ke$ha performed “Die Young” which was somewhat bizarre but also enjoyable; would you expect anything less from her? Next up, Taylor Swift performed “I Knew You Were Trouble,” one of my personal favorites off ‘Red’. Her dancers and costume change made the masquerade ball scene unforgettable.

The Favorite Soul R&B Male went to Usher, who’s acceptance speech included something that was bleeped out. Hmm. Guess we will never know? Unless you were there, comment below!

The show continued with the Favorite Country Male Award, with nominees being Eric Church, Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean, Bryan won his first AMA! P!NK did a repeat of her music video with her performance of “The Truth About Love” and proved that in addition to being a great singer she can also dance and do some sick partner work. The New Artist of the Year Award went to Carly Rae Jepsen, very much deserved! Lady Antebellum picked up the Favorite Country Band, Duo, or Group Award.

Justin Bieber made the wait for his acoustic album even harder for his fans when he started his performance with an unplugged “As Long As You Love Me.” He then switched it up, going straight into “Beauty And a Beat” and yes, Nicki still rapped the ‘Selenur’ part!

Later, Luke Bryan and Jenny McCarthy presented the award for Favorite Pop/Rock Album, which went to Justin Bieber. McCarthy rewarded Bieber with more than the award, smothering him in kisses as he made his way to the mic. Carrie Underwood won Best Country Album, along with every other album she has ever made! Stevie Wonder did an awesome tribute to Dick Clark, his friend of 49 years.

The last award, Artist of the Year went to JUSTIN BIEBER! Who took a VERY surprised Pattie Mallette, a.k.a his mom, on stage with him, he ended his speech by saying “I love you guys so much, I will always make you proud.”

Psy got the entire building on their feet when he closed out the show with “Gangnam Style” accompanied by special guest MC Hammer, who danced alongside him, they celebrated the American Music Awards’ 40th Birthday just right!
