What’s Hot: Top 5 YouTube Artists

August 31, 2012

Between all the recent cover contests, new albums, and singing shows holding auditions via the Internet, you can be sure to be redirected to some great artists when visiting YouTube. With combined channel subscriptions reaching over three and a half million, these five talented users have some of the most popular music and covers this week.

1. Megan Nicole:  This girl treats her viewers to not only a lovely voice, but some story telling as well. Unlike most users, Megan Nicole typically does music videos with her covers, rather than just singing them in front of a webcam. The Texas native began uploading covers two years ago, but about three days ago took a big step, in signing with Bad Boy/ Interscope records; the label founded by Sean “Diddy” Combs, who has also represented Janelle Monáe, Machine Gun Kelly, and Gorilla Zoe. She has a new song, “b-e-a-utiful”  for purchase on iTunes, but check out her latest cover, Taylor Swift’s “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” here:

2. Pentatonix:  An a capella group of five friends, Pentatonix is made up of  Scott Hoying, Kirstin Maldonado, Mitch Grassi, Avi Kaplan and Kevin Olusola. You might remember the group as being the victor’s from the third season of NBC’s The Sing Off.  After winning, they received a recording soundtrack with Sony Music.  The coolest thing about the group’s covers is that as an a capella crew, they don’t use any backup music, their voices make up every part of the track. See their mash-up of Katy Perry’s “Wide Awake” and Justin Bieber’s “As Long As You Love Me” below:

3. Alex Goot: With his fresh sound and adorable style, Alex Goot will surely find his way into your heart.  His covers are kind of like the Lay’s slogan, in the way that listening to only one will leave you coming back for more, his “Call Me Maybe” rendition has over four million views .  Alex is a 24 year-old from New York who has a creative way of producing all of his own music featured on his Youtube page.  He has released two volumes of covers, “Songs I Wish I Wrote,” an EP, and an album that can be purchased on iTunes.  Check out his cover of Good Time here:

4. Christina Grimmie: Often accompanied by a keyboard, Christina’s beautiful voice is one that sounds like it came right off the radio. The 18 year-old whose YouTube channel became super popular a few years ago with her “Party in the USA” cover has since done some pretty big things, including being the opening act Selena Gomez &  the Scene for six weeks on the We Own the Night Tour.  Christina’s powerful voice and positivity has gained her a giant fan base, whom she recently tweeted about saying,” I don’t care who yu are. No ones fans are better than mine. TEAM GRIMMIE WILL RAWWK YU.” You have to hear her if you haven’t yet!  Listen to her cover of “Titanium” by David Guetta feat. Sia here:

5. Lisa Scinta: Another talented YouTube artist, Lisa Scinta lives in Los Angeles, California and performs most of her songs on the bathroom floor with a keyboard or guitar; she is pretty good at both! I must say that some of Lisa’s covers I like more than the originals, and she has also put out an EP, “Naked” with original songs that are pretty great too. She will sometimes cover rap songs, giving them a totally different feel, like “Love the Way You Lie,” by Eminem that reached almost two million hits. Lisa recently auditioned for The Voice, which you can catch on NBC beginning Sept. 10. Check out her mashup of Gotye’s Somebody That I Used To Know and Katy Perry’s Part of Me:
