Has anyone else recently found themselves wondering, “What happened to Green Day?” The rock group seemed to have slipped from under the radar for the past few years, but now I know why. After seeing a hilarious commercial on MTV for the Video Music Awards featuring the band, I did my research, and it turns out the three American idiots will make their way back into the spotlight with not one, but three new albums.

The trio power pack has definitely been keeping busy for the last couple of years.  After 21st Century Breakdown came out in mid-2009, the band set off for a world tour, which didn’t end until early 2010. In March of the same year, a musical opened on Broadway, American Idiot: The Musical, which was an adaptation of the band’s seventh studio album. The musical did not feature Green Day, but Billie Joe Armstrong appeared numerous times throughout its 422-show run.

Back in April, lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong announced the group would be releasing new music. As it turns out, the band is putting out an album trilogy; ¡Uno!, ¡Dos! and ¡Tre!.  The track listing for the first album in the trilogy was recently made public on the band’s website; it will include 12 new songs. The first single from ¡Uno!,Oh Love” premiered on the radio and MTV July 16, and  the music video was released on Thursday, August 16th.

The music video may feature some quite scandalous models, but it was the punk rock band’s new sound that caught our attention. “We’re changing the guitar sound,” Armstrong said in a recent interview with Rolling Stone about the new albums. “We’re not going with the big Marshall-amp thing. We wanted something punchier, more power pop – somewhere between AC/DC and the early Beatles.”

The ¡Uno!, ¡Dos! and ¡Tre!.  albums are set for release September 25, 2012, November 13, 2012, and January 15, 2013.  Watch the video for “Oh Love” below and be sure catch the band make their fifth live performance on the VMA’s Sept. 6, beginning at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
