The Staying Power of One Direction

I can’t seem to get through a second of my day without hearing something about the boys from One Direction or 1D as their fans call them. They are constantly popping everywhere; on Twitter, with their worldwide trending topics, on Pandora radio, no matter what station you choose, and they have even climbed to #2 on iTunes charts. Their faces are plastered everywhere, Tumblr, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, you can’t escape these guys even if you wanted to… but who doesn’t love a good boy band, RIGHT?

As a music blogger they are getting harder and harder to ignore (& trust me, I’ve tried) but the boys from One Direction can’t be stopped. So, I decided that it was finally time to see what the fuss was all about and needless to say, I wasn’t disappointed.

First becoming known for being finalist on the British X factor, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson all came into the competition as solo artist but were then forced to join forces to make the cut to the live shows. Though they did not win, coming in third overall, Simon Cowell’s record label Syco Records instantly signed them after the final show aired. Ever since, they have blown up all over the map.

They have the accolades to back up their popularity too… “What Makes You Beautiful” their début single peaked at #1 in the UK and is currently residing at #6 on the US iTunes top ten. There one and only album, Up All Night début at #1 on the US billboard top 200. These numbers are nothing to laugh at either. Their single is currently on top of some of music’s heaviest hitters like Justin Bieber, The Wanted, Nicki Minaj and many others.

They are also nabbing some of the most sought after gigs in the business, performing on Saturday Night Live (SNL) this month. Though critics had their doubts when it was announced that they would be performing at the infamous venue, they proved the naysayers wrong by nailing their live performance.

Recently, they have also announced their tour. The band will play over 60 shows touring in Europe, Australia, and North America this year. However, don’t get too excited because tickets are totally SOLD OUT everywhere. However, the band and their management are working hard to add more shows to accommodate the fans worldwide.

Though little can be said about 1D’s staying power, one thing is for sure, they are starting off on the right foot. (& they know the DJ!)

Tell us what you think about One Direction.
