Rihanna, Nickelback, Mary J. Blige, & Lady Gaga Release New Albums

November 22, 2011

Coming off of a win for Favorite Soul/R&B Album for “Loud” at the 2011 American Music Awards, Rihanna released her 6th album today.  The album entitled “Talk that Talk” already has a No. 1 single, ‘We Found Love,’ but does the album itself have what it takes to surpass her 2007 “Good Girl Gone Bad” which hit No. 2 on the Billboard 200?

The Barbados beauty will have to battle for the top spot with veteran R&B queen, Mary J. Blige, Mother Monster herself, Lady Gaga, and Nickelback. (If you ask me, that’s some pretty tough competition.)

Mary J. Blige has had every studio album since 1997 debut at No. 1 or No 2 on the Billboard 200. So there’s no reason to believe that her new album, “My Life II: The Journey Continues” can’t continue the streak. Blige gave an astonishing performance of ‘Mr. Wrong’ at last night’s American Music Awards (in which her vocals did not falter one bit). At the end of the performance, a picture of the recently deceased rapper Heavy D appeared on the screen behind her. Mary’s eyes amplified with emotion she stated. “Rest in peace my dear friend, my loved one, my brother; the loveable and great Heavy D. I miss you so much brother.”

Canadian rock band Nickelback released their seventh album titled “Here and Now.” The band has not released an album since their “Dark Horse” album hit the charts in 2008. Even though they’ve been off the scene for a while, I wouldn’t count them out as being a top contender for Billboard’s No. 1 spot.

Not only is Lady Gaga known for her outrageous costumes and elaborate performances, but she’s also known for her album success.  Her sophomore album “Born This Way” debuted in the top five spots in every major music market. Impressive much? I think so.  Will “Born This Way: The Remix” follow the same success? I think the answer to that is rhetorical considering her millions of “Little Monsters.”

Regardless who comes out on top of next week’s Billboard, all of these albums are going to be added to my collection. What about yours?
